Drivetrain One-ball Mod : Where to get it done?
One-ball Mod : Where to get it done?
This would be my first post on here, however I've used this forum extensively as a reference for numerous things so thanks ahead of time!
Anyway to the point, Im itching badly to do the one-ball mod however the 2 shops I went to are charging 150$ and don't really seem to have a clue what to do beyond the diagram I showed them giving a basic idea of what the one-ball is. From what I've read its been done for way less - which would be ideal for a college student on a super tight budget. I live in Rockland county, NY.
If anyone knows of shop that can do a good job and not break the bank I would greatly appreciate it! Cheers!

Keep trying different shops.
Have them lift the car so they can see what you want. They will see it is an easy mod and then won't want to charge so much.
I went to a Maxi shop. They did not want to do it until they got the car in the air and saw it was easy. In and out in 20 min for $50.

I was looking to getting a sport exhaust, like an alta or borla, but for way way less a One-ball mod seems like the way to go. Im not looking for much of a performance gain as much as I want a little bit more of an aggresive sound. I'm just getting annoyed with the muffler shops around my immediate area trying to stiff arm me for 150$ when the work and materials used is no where near that price.
I would do the mod myself but seeing how I dont have a mandrel bender (and ordering the part online for 125$ + shipping) getting it done somewhere looks like the way to go. Thanks for the help.

I spent $40 at an independent muffler shop in the "poor" part of town... Showed them the pictures of what I wanted since I didn't speak Spanish too well, and they did it just fine while I sat and ate my lunch in their waiting room. Find the right shop that will do it for what you want to spend.
If you lived here on the left coast i'd say you could get the one-ball done
for under a hundred dollars.got mine done for about 75 dollars.for a low
buck mod you can't go wrong.if you go to www.mini2.com and search
for Gtt exhaust back pressure Roland had some backpressure numbers
for stock, one-ball & catback system the numbers he came up with

Hi Guys, we have now made a suitable probe with thermal decoupling to enable us to check positive pressure within the exhaust system. all tests results will be at WOT using -17% SC pulley at 6500rpm. There are 2 places we can connect the guage these are
(1) Before the cat which will measure the overall back pressure of the cat (not the manifold primaries though) PLUS the 'cat back system'
(2) After the cat, measuring just the back pressure building up in the 'cat back system'.
-Initial tests will be connected at ' 2'
We want to test;-
1) Complete stock system
2) Stock system with GTT 'Re-Route Pipe' (deletes one of the two silencers)
3) JCW System
4) As many aftermarket systems as possible.
The tests are NOT comparing build quality, fit, sound, appearance but only back pressure.
High back pressure here will almost certainly be losing power, causing excess heat at the exhaust valves & compromising fuel economy. It is quite difficult to design a non restrictive system for the Mini that isnt too noisy. Small diameter pipes, tight bends, more silencers coupled with restrictive silencer materials, all shut out noise ,but build up back pressure under full bore as a consequence. Also any deliberate or accidental mega restriction 'out of view' will show up big time. By this I mean things like weld that almost fills the bore ,mega mis-alighnment between two tubes within the silencer, or excess flattening of the pipe ends within the silencer. All these are a good way to 'shut the damn thing up a bit ' without redesigning from scratch. -It can happen..

Cat -Back 'System' Results So Far, (check back regularly as will add every result as we get it).Remember the LOWER the reading the better!
SCORPION .........+3.5psi
STOCK................+2.5psi (' 03 car)
GT TUNING 'RE-ROUTE PIPE' (combined with 'stock' system) ..........+1.75psi ('03 car) (One Ball Mod)
JCW ...................+3.75psi
Miltek..................+1.25psi

Wow thats a helluva lot of good information! thanks for posting that! Now I'm dead set on the one ball, trick is finding the place to do it. I called a few more shops and it keeps getting worse. 200$ so far tops the most expensive (except for helix which I dont know what they are smoking for their price, beiing nearly 300$). Looks like a drive through the hood in Newark or Jersey City might get me the best deal... better brush up on my spanish and self defense techniques.
I wouldn't recommend this to anyone who can get it done locally for $40-60, but, if you can't find cheaper than $150 and you're willing to do it yourself, check out:

It just clamps on -- no welding.

minimizd06 I noticed that you live in my area, I can check with a mechanic that my uncle knows in Lyndhurst and see how much he would charge. But he wouldn't be back until Friday. I can check tomorrow to see his price range and if he could do it.
Thanks for all the help! I got someone to fabricate me a pipe and I'm gonna attempt to one-ball the car on my own. Just have to get it up on jack stands, drop the exhaust and do some surgery. I will definetly keep the numbers handy though, just in case I manage to screw up. Ill take loads of pics and a few videos, before, empty pipe (probably gonna be loud as hell), and after (one balled). I'll do my best to remember to post em. Thanks again for all the help!
