oil catch cans

Here is my set up for 2 oil catch cans. One is hooked up to the pvc side nd the other is hooked up to the air intake side. Tthis way the original plumbing is kept.

questions are welcomed

How do you drain it? And why do you need two catch cans?

Nice install!

The black mounting bracket, did that come with the ALTA or did you fab that yourself?

Thanks
Rick

Arly, I only see one can in your picture.

Malcon, you used the same connection pionts as Arly correct?

yes, only he has a second can (behind the fire wire wall) and the other two hoses are running from the rocker cover to the intake tubing. i had no buildup or anything in that hose.

I see it now thanks for pointing that out.

I do not understand how there would be any oil in the intake other than the oil coming off the CAI fitler if it was over serviced. What other reason would oil show up in the intake?

Thanks.

same reason oil may be found in the IC. it may excape the rocker cover through the vents. i have nocited a puddle of oil in my catch can that i have stopped from going into my ic, but there was no residue in the intake. it would just get pushed in there every once and a while because of the vacume, etc.

So, once you install the catch can between the PVC and rocker cover it should keep all oil out of the IC?

Installing the other can would be for additional insurance then?

Thanks

Arly, are you getting any oil in your 2nd can?

I am curious as I have seen several different ways to attach OCCs on NAM and it seems that the one config that always seem to catch oil is on the PVC side, while the other does not seem to catch much if any at all.

Malcon, swanky hoses , where did you get them? I am having the hardest time finding hoses to fit my can, everyone seems to be out of 3/8" hose

exactly. or you could just add more hoses and just use one catch can (just add T fittings etc) but the steal braided hose is a bit expensive once you get into adding more of it .
thanks man, i got the hose from a local performance chop its the russel steal braided hose. then i just got the fittings to connect to the catch can (i had to go with the 45 and 90 degree so that i could screw the second one on withought getting in the first fitting's way...i hope that makes some sence) but yeah they are great, the hoses that came with my catch can would implode do to the vacume of the supercharger. so it may be a smart thing to do. and yes there was zero build up in the intake side (this was after 5000 miles of driving)
hope this helped

I fabbed the bracket. I catch oil on the PVC side. I have not yet seen oil on the intake side even after a hot track day redlining most of the day. Before I installed the intake OCC I checked the IC and found oil in the boots and there was film on the inside of the IC. Clean the parts and reinstalled the IC and then added the 2nd OCC. I will check if adding the 2nd OCC has prevented the oil collection. If this does not work, I will try to baffle the inside of both cans and then reinspect the IC.

Well since you asked.

1. Atrocious spelling
2. You really shouldn't "steal" braided hose it's against the law. (see #1)
3. How on earth can a hose "implode"? Collapse maybe but implode?
4. Normal "vacuum" hoses will work fine. Mine have for thousands of miles.
5. And since when does a supercharger create "vacuum"?
6. Don't get all angry because you asked

the OCC on the PCV side, which routes to the SC does make the OCC to collapse because that is how the system works when there is no can attached. The SC is sucking air from the topside through the PCV. I placed a pvc tube in it to prevent the can from collapsing into itself. ALTA offers a Stainless tube to address this issue. Jeff, from Perrin(Alta) suggested this as well as others who run the can from the pcv side.

Easy there 'killer'!

Didn't someone ever tell you "if you have nothing nice to say, do not say anything at all"?

FWIW, superchargers do make vaccum....check out the boost gauge Mini offers, it has both +/- boost. Turbo chargers I believe do not produce vacuum, but then again I could be wrong.

oh so it really has nothing to do with the issue. your just being a smart ellic

great contribution.

anyway, the hose that came with the catch can was a cheap clear hose, and it would collapse (hey thanks for the spell check), im pretty sure it wasnt from the pvc blowing into it...
anyway i guess you dont have the same hose that came with my catch can, or for thousands of miles, yours has been worthless.

anyway lets put our CHILDISH behavior aside.

Positive Crankcase Ventiliation plumbing functions.

The hose TO the PCV (then to the manifold) is ALWAYS drawing air from inside the engine.

The hose from the Air intake to the engine is pulling in fresh air into the engine at low engine revs, but at high revs where there is some blow by it is VENTING crankcase fumes INTO the intake.

These lines should NEVER be teed together to the same catch can as that stops the circulation of fresh air through the engine. Crud that should be pulled out of the crankcase and burned (or caught in a catch can) stays in the oil, contaminating it, and requiring more frequent oil changes.

Depending on the amount of blow by your engine has, and the amount of time you spend at high revs, the "supply" tube may never show oil.

John

He asked. I said nothing until then.

Superchargers produce boost. It's what they do.
All engines produce vacuum, that is why that gauge shows vacuum.

Here's a primer for you

FYI a turbo is properly called a turbine driven supercharger.

If you want to be taken seriously, learn to spell and know what you're talking about when you make empirical statements like "superchargers do make vaccum....check out the boost gauge Mini offers, it has both +/- boost".
You're basing your argument on the picture of a gauge? There is no such thing as negative (-) boost and it's still spelled vacuum. The use of vacuum in this instance is actually a common usage misnomer. Vacuum is a state. What is actually being stated is pressure above and below atmospheric. Doesn't sound as cool or is it as easy to say as vacuum and boost.

This is going way OT so I'm done. No more wasting bandwidth for me.

And one more thing, thanks for the lesson on how turbochargers and superchargers work....I do not know how I got my A&P never mind know how the airplanes I fly work without you!
