Drivetrain Water to air intercooler
Here's something else I'm working on:

This is from a car in New Zealand, and we working together to bring it to the states. One option is through jlm here in the states, the other is through the person who owns this car.

This sure sound neat, but the earlier description and something Randy said has me wondering... what if that (Subaru) pump fails or you have a leak? Do you need to have an "idiot light" for such a possibility, or could you just rely on the lack of power from overheated (possibly pre-ignitition inducing) air alerting you to the problem?
It seems like a system such as this might require additional monitoring over that of a typical air-to-air intercooler.
If you have a water pump fail on your engine cooling system, you'll likely know about it before any damage occurs. If you have a water pump failure on your intercooler installation, what then?

Randy,
Looks like a great setup.......
I actually brought this up back in (i think) april of last year with little interest. I'm glad to see someone putting this idea together for "S" owners. Should be a nice little mod.
Re: Cooper hood on the "S"
I actually brought this up back at the begining with little interest also. My thought was to move the intercooler down to the lower front grile thus freeing up the space above said engine and allowing the "Cooper" hood to fit nicely. Randy.... any thoughts on that?
Happy Motoring,
SW
PS. on the water to air setup...... PLEASE.... make the opening of the bottle large enough to fit whole ice! hehe

>>Randy,
>>interesting post, but do you have more details on how the heat from the water gets dumped? Is there another water to air interchanger to cool the water? Where is it located?

That small AC condenser looking thing is the radiator to cool the water on the intercooler.
You can see the small hose running to it.

Azwed is right - if you look at the side picture, you can follow the hose to the front of the car and see the extra radiator in front of the factory radiator.
Let me know if you have any other questions.

Randy,
Do you have any idea what the time frame, and cost of the water cooled intercooler. I think that MINI should have done it this way in the first place.
I am very interested in this mod, and I think this would work really good with the overdrive pulley.
Thank You.

jlm and I are both working in parallel and in series on this. I'll keep everyone posted on the progress. It should be ready for testing in the next couple weeks, with product available in a month or so. Cost should be reasonable - under $1000.
Let me know if you have any other questions.
