Exhaust Mod v. Supercharger Whine

since my installation of the John Cooper Motorsport exhaust (manifold, CAT and muffler) my exhaust note has been roaring over my SC whine.

i used to enjoy the whine at around 4k RPM. now because of the exhaust and sound level upgrade i have to really listen for the whine at 5k+ RPM.

i completely enjoy the JCM note but was hoping for a mod to increase my SC whine so i can enjoy that signature MINI whine as often as before...

any thoughts? i have JCW filter installed by the way.

okay, HAI seemed to be the mod to get my SC whine like theres no tomorrow.

but are there other options out there besides the HAI? I am not sure about getting rid of the JCW CAI i already have...

how about pulleys? does that have any impact at all on the SC sound level?

Its not free! The petrol.....

But seriously, the HAI will make the SC louder to the outside world, but if you want it to be loud inside as well as out, get a CAI. Like the ALTA. I can't even hear my oneball over my SC, even with a stock pulley. Now I have a 17% pulley and it shrieks.

Go CAI

Putting a screw through the side or top of the snorkel on the JCW box to hold the door open should let you try the CAI-like sound, and would be easily removable in case you didn't like it.

And a 19% starts whining loudly at ~3000rpm rather than 4000.

look for a used Alta or a new HDI..... of the two I prefer the HDI because the sound blends well with my exhaust....it does not over power it...... the top choice for me is the AGS..... I will have mine on hopfully within 30 days...... I am making the change for throttle response and power rather than sound.....my friends with the AGS rave about them....these are experienced knowledgeable guys that I trust... MSFITOY for 1.....

FYI the Alta is very loud in the cabin..... maybe it is just me but HAI and one-ball IMO are not very elegant choices and something I would not do to a $3K ricer......

I agree - changing your CAI will add more acoustical whine. In my case I am running the mymini closed box (similar to HDI) with a ITG foam filter.

How to test - remove your JWC top/filter and do a test run (i.e. no filter) - for a little protection place a stocking over the inlet tube to keep out debri. 1 test run should confirm the acoustic level you should be getting.

AGS increases the SC whine quite well.

I have a HAI, and while I have not heard the JCW CAI, the HAI SCREAMS! and I LOVE it. But, if your worried about performance, go with a different CAI. You could always sell the JCW intake...I'm sure someone would buy it.
