Designing custom exhaust.

hello fellow namers.

first of all, yes! I have searched the forum for a bit and decided to make a thread about it to get some answers.

I was looking around in my local area for someone who can do one-ball exhaust modification without costing me alot of money. Well so far, no luck (i haven't tried the midas yet..)
but While I was at it, I thought about doing a little modification to it since they will be chopping the exhaust down.

I know the diameter of the stock exhaust is 2 1/4 (correct me if i am wrong). Would it be OK to change out the muffler to an aftermarket brand one? (so the one-ball sounds like an aftermarket.. ) if yes, what brand carrys the ones that will fit in with the one-ball modification?

I have no clue of the price range of these exhaust parts.. how much should I be expecting from doing a bit of modification? (i've seen somewhere between 100-300 for a 100% custom.)

I want to make my car to flow better since i have done the pulley and intake.

Help a n00b out.. Thanks!

Lots of information here on NAM, and lots of knowledgable people. One problem I see with using an aftermarket muffler is the mounts. My Milltek uses the stock rubber mounts, which you would probably want to use, unless you're going to remove the battery box, which puts you into a different league altogether. I'd also worry about the sound, especially if you want to avoid the "fart in a can" (aka Ricer) sound. There are some relatively inexpensive systems, like the OBX (see posts by Bahamabart)

cheers,

sprp85, I answered your question in your other thread for the local area. Check their website, they got all kinds of "standard mufflers". If you talk to them, I would bet they can answer all your questions

If your gonna have the shop replace the can with a new muffler why not just have them replace all the tubing as well?

You can get a magnaflow muffler and have a complete 2.5" single muffler system installed for a very reasonable price, subject to finding a local custom exhaust shop that is.......lol

I have yet to see a custom exaust that sounded good... at least in person... they usually sound like a POS Honda with a coffee can on the back... i.e. POOP

As mentioned, I am running the OBX CatBack and for 299.00 I am pleased. In my original posts I think I critiqued pretty honestly the pros and cons but here is an update after 10,000 miles.

1) I switched out the tips for the supersprint viper tips and it changed the tone - less raspy. Since it is a Supersprint clone it will accept any of the 4 tips offered by SS. The downsid eis that SS tips are very expensive, I got the Viper tips used.

2) Overall it seems to have mellowed a bit but this system is still loud. I attended a Mini ralle and got several thumbs up on the sound.

3) While not the best CatBack, I looked at the fact that I was able to buy/install the OBX header and the OBX catback for the same price as just a Catback.

My advice to you - do a 1-ball using stock mufffler or look for a used cat-back. More importantly is read on MIni2 the testing that GTT is doing on back pressure - the 1-ball did extremelly well.

If I had my choice for the $ - I'd take a header plus 1 ball over any catback system.

good luck

Thank you all for great advises!
Oh and About the OBX exhaust, I remember reading about it did not come with mid-pipe. Can I buy a super sprint resonator pipe or something match up the inlet/outlet of the OBX (i do not know the exact spec tho.) Please let me know! OBX sounds interesting.

You are correct no MID pipe so its not a true "CATBACK". Its a SS clone so yes you could buy the SS pipe w/ or without resonator (would suggest w/ resonator).

I am using the stock mid pipe - did have some difficulting mating the centerpipe to the OBX because the "connector piece supplied by OBX was not the correct size. I slipped a 3 long pipe OVER the stock pipe end and that allowed me to slip that IN to the OBX piece. Also supplied clamps are the cheapies - I bought the stainless ones from a boating store.

I got in contact with Ryephile from MichiganMini.org and he told me for a really loud but rewarding system is to have a Acoustic Resonator like a Flowmaster Hushpower II and then a muffler like Holley Hooker Aero Chamber all 2.5" tubing and all this maxes out the total performance of the stock header

Sounds like my experience today after installing the RMW header-cat+Magnaflow+Borla system...
