I consider an complete engine swap along the lines of radical surgery.

If it would come out and go in with a "clean" swap that would not be bad.....

Excerpt from 2002 Neon Manual
"2002 1.6L: TBW
Plans to put the 1.6L I4 motor that was co-designed with BMW were scrapped at the very last minute. That's why this motor still appears in the Factory Service Manual."
http://www.sportcompactcarweb.com/pr...e_neon_part_2/
Here is a neon project car on Sport Compact Car Web. Read it, the neon engine would have to be upgraded.
I don't understand why putting a neon engine in a good Mini would be a good thing.

SpiderX are you talking about fitting the Neon SRT4 engine into a MINI?

Yes, that engine is easily 300 whp ..... but this is just a "what if" thread..... if it was possible/plausible I would consider it maybe next year instead of twin charge etc.....just a musing.....to see if others have considered it and have doen some research

I'm really bored, and the dodge dealership is close buy...I'll go take some measurements, or at least find out if anyone there has specs.

Well, since the SRT-4 is no longer in production, I couldnt get any specs from sales, and service said they didnt even have that info in their factory manual . I also found out that the new 2.4L that will be in the caliper shares no parts with the old SRT-4 engine, but sales didn't have any info, because dodge has yet to release any final specifications on the SRT-4 caliper. The used lot, didnt have any neons at all, so no luck there either. I guess a Neon web board will be our best bet...

I have a friend who owns one and dyno at over 400 whp. Let me ring him and wake him up. He runs low 12s in the drag strip and he always laugh when M3 and Mustang pull aside of him but blows them away never thought of swoping the motor

here is a pic of the engine bay that i found i found out a little about the 2.4 on wikipedia.org here it is The 2.4 L (2429 cc) EDZ engine is very similar to the 2.0, sharing the same bore and DOHC cylinder head, but it has a taller block and longer 101 mm stroke. It also uses balance shafts to smooth vibrations and is built in Saltillo, Mexico. Output was up to 140 hp when production started in 1994 for the 1995 model year. As of 2004, output is 147 hp SAE (110 kW) at 5200 rpm with 165 ft·lbf (224 N·m) of torque at 4000 rpm. hope this helps with the what if ???

04+ SRT-4's are rated at 230WHP, were the 03's are 215WHP. It's the same engine that is in the Chrysler Cirrus LXi / Dodge Stratus (From the Mexican cars), albeit in a turbocharged verson. Also found in the 02 PT Cruiser GT

I can only imagine that buying an SRT-4 motor/tranny would set you back a bunch *hops on ebay*

Well, didnt find anything there. Went here http://forums.neons.org/ and found out that built 2.4L are about 2k or so for the longblock. Not a bad deal, but that's not including turbo or anything else. Considering that everything besides the engine would be custom anyway it doesn't really matter how much a "full" SRT 4 swap is.

I think the 2.4L is a bit dreamy. Its going to be taller, wider, and deeper than our 1.6, so even in the motor mounts were in the same place, you would have to fab them anyway. I think a more likely swap would be a 1.8t from a VW.

Either way swapping in a totally different powerplant will require a TON (I'd like to emphasize that word) of fab., and a TON of wiring. I can't see the project being under 10K, at the very, very least.

For 10K you can put 250 to the wheels with our engine easy anyway...so I aside from "did you hear some guy put a neon engine in a mini!!" I don't really see it's worth.

Here is a link to some great info about the Dodge 2.4L
http://www.allpar.com/mopar/24.html

In the end I think the money could be better spent making a bulletproof 1.6L and boosting the heck out of it.

This won't answer your question, but here's some food for thought...

Give it some time. In all liklihood, someone will end up transplating the Gen II new MINI (set to launch this fall) turbo motor into one of our cars. Since the platform is essentially the same, I don't see any major hurdles as far as hardware swap goes. Splicing in the harness and the small niggles may be a bit of a challenge, but those things will work themselves out as the cost of 2nd-hand engines from the GenII drop as more and more end up in junkyards, etc.

Let me put it this way, if Hartge can shoehorn a new M5 motor / SMG tranny into the new 3-series sedan platform, somebody will figure out a way to drop the turbo MINI motor into one of our cars.

I agree with you Z. The other likely "swap" would be the possibility of using the new bits (turbo, charge piping, etc) with our existing engine. With the release of the 2nd gen, the MINI world will be a whole new place. Oh how I long for a DOHC

I love it when people dare to dream (or have acid flash backs!) - LOL

Does anyone remember the Renault R5 Turbo? This was the "le car" with a mid engine transplant. Plenty of room behind the seats SpiderX !

That's not dreaming.... you're 4 cylinders short!

http://www.spagweb.com/v8mini/v8fools/index.htm

Those are all classic mini conversions. I've seen (but can't find) an English conversion of a new Mini to a transverse Rover V8......

Here's the Northstar is some stuff....
