ALTA Box Top
Well, I was another of the lucky ones that got to try and test fit the New ALTA Box Top. I chose to install it without drilling a new hole (You will see in the pictures below what hole I am talking about). For those of you that have the M7 STB This will fit. I think MDSBrain had a picture of it as well? You can also take comfort in knowing that the Foam Filter is even more secure than it was before.
The box top, as of 5.13 has been on my MCS for about 2 weeks, so I've had a good amount of time for testing and fitting in a daily driver. The top itself cleans up the engine bay nicely. For those of you who are looking to quiet down the whine of the ALTA intake this may help out, But still expect your car to scream at WOT.

I'm assuming I'm not the only one who has this sound, but speak up if you haven't heard this: does the box top help to squelch the high-pitched whistle that I assume comes from the throttlebody at partial throttle? This is different than the supercharger whine...

Can is see some photos from the rear of the engine bay looking foreward and a straight down veiw (both with top on)? I hit a lake (well a REALLY big puddle) and had some water get through the cowl and splash onto the filter, I'm looking to see if the box top would have been able to block any of that. Thankfully I had acess to my cleaning kit, and the filter had its second oiling in three days.

Answered my question, doesn't look like the top goes quite far enough to protect me from a recurrance; I was planning on fabricating a little something this weekend anywho, just had the idea to come up with a top while I'm at it, and as I'm typing even considering a new bottom to the air box so it will all me match silver and seal things up (I have a gap between the sock plastic and the ALTA box) the DIY thing is addictive, I'll post pics when I'm done, thanks for the photos.Joined: Feb 2003

It definitely covers the element from any splash from the top. You could maybe combine it with the MINI-Madness cowl mod, which is basically a hole in the cowl wall. You would probably have to make a few modifications to the cowl to get it to fit correctly though.
that should still get you good air flow and keep you safe from water and lakes.

good luck
I thought about that type of mod but I'm looking for even less blockage and I like the idea of keeping my stock cowl unharmed, I have some spare aluminum lying around the garage so I was thing I could defelect just enough that if water splashed in it wouldn't hit the filter, and if I do it right I may even be able to get a vorticy to put more air on the intake than without anything (unfortunately I doubt the butt dyno is prescise enohg to measure any gains). I'm going to do a full write up, esp. I ot make my heatshield into a sealed box.
