Terrible Fuel Consumption

My MCS with the mods listed in my sig has terrible FC....

The OBC says 12.0 (Litres per 100km), and although that's bad enough as it is, it's not accurate, not by a long shot....I'm actually getting over 15 L per 100km...

Does anyone know what can cause fuel consumption to be as bad as this? I don't drive it that hard, and most of my driving isn't peak hour traffic, it's mostly 30-40mph (50-70 kph) pootling about...

I'm suspecting it has something to do with the VGS i installed, but i read the thread, and there are people saying that their fuel consumption is the same if not better....the consumption never used to be good, but this is costing me a lot of money...

-EDIT, i know someone with similar mods, except he has a 17% pulley, injectors and larger IC, without the VGS, and he says he gets 8.3 L per 100km! And he drives VERY spiritedly.....

Thanks in advance,
Elie

At 8.3 L/100km (~28.3 mpg (US)), your friend's FC seems a little optimistic. I'd ask for hard, calculated data and the conditions under which s/he is attaining that FC (all highway?).

However, your 15 L/100Km (~15.7 mpg (US)) seems very abnormal, even if you're driving in predominantly city-based environments. With a mix of modest city/highway driving, I'm guessing your FC should be in the 9.8 - 9.0 range.

The first thing I would do is reload the ECU with the MINI software you overwrote with the MTH maps. Go through 2 or 3 fill-ups under the MINI software and see if you approach the 9.x FC range. If not, reconnect the vacuum hoses as per stock and try a few more fill-ups. If still not in the 9.x range....time to talk to MINI!

FWIW,

Theo

My 06 only has 500 miles on it. The first tank of gas I got 26MPG. The second tank 27MPG.(dividing miles driven by fuel filled to full). Mix of driving is 35%Hwy/ 65% CITY. Not to bad. I'm taking a 400 mile trip soon I''ll post my pure HWY milage. I'm hoping for mid 30's.

You guys are getting pretty good mileage. I average around 20MPG and on my last fillup, I got 17MPG.

Even if you talked to Mini, would they be able to do anything about your mileage?

Hey there,

Well my On Board Comp. tells me I am getting about 28-29 MPG ( all in town driving ) , but according to my calcs. I am getting about 24-25MPG. Not great but not to bad for a sprots car that is driven mostly in town - very spritedly.

The OBC sucks...

it failed math. When I took over 5000 miles of logged gas tank milage to Mini of Mountain View showing an over 30% error on the MPG calculations, the service manager told me this was normal, and handed me a photocopy of a speedometer error adjustment memo!

FWIW, he was totally speachless when I asked him what his reaction would be if the car company he bought an option from told him that 30% error was "normal"? I've never had satisfaction, and just mentally calculate 75% of the number it gives me.

Kind of sucks.

Matt

There are correction factors that can be input via the cluster. I'm suprised the service manager didn't offer to adjust it, especially if you already had the data.

Edit: My mistake. Looks like this is only availabel on BMW. I you are able to get cluster test #20 it can be done.

Something to check with the VGS

Make msure eveything is tighly connected, I know someone who had the hose slip pff the FPR and it basically flooded the engine under acceleration. If the hose had a small hole or was loose I could see this negatively impacting km per litre.

yeh that does make sense, i never thought about the FPR.....cos maybe it didn't go on properly when i did the VGS, but the car seems to be just as fast....well I'm getting a new MTH file to accomodate my 17% pulley and VGS (pulley is going in in a couple of days), and we'll see if the new file works better, if not, i'll give the FPR hose a crack....it's just that i'm very reluctant to take the IC off again, cos of the rubbish alta IC boots, they are such a b1tch to put on!

BTW Matt is very right, the OBC is crap....
