I've called the police to report people in very loud vehicles before. It is a public nuisance and if the current laws aren't sufficient to take care of the offenders, then maybe new laws should be passed. I've had aftermarket exhausts on many different vehicles I've owned, but I've always made sure that they were reasonably quiet (yes, I have my own sound meter), and event went to the extent of installing three different mufflers on a 4 cyl car that had a long tube header, just to keep it quiet enough. There is something called respect, a lot of people need to learn what it means, even a few people on here.

anything new?
The other night I was coming up the hill on my street. Half way up it has dog leg left, after which I floored it to hit 50 mph just for the fun of it.
At the top I late braked, and then I saw two Sheriff cars at the stop sign for the other street!
I was going slow by the time they saw me.
I was thinking how busted I would have been if I were driving Tuls' car!
Good reason for being quiet.

Sorry for dragging up an old thread, but an encounter with CHP yesterday left me thinking about this. I had just picked up my MINI that was at Minicorsa for the past two weeks for an engine rebuild. I was headed to my shop and was getting tired, so my wife offered to drive my MINI. Let me say that the last time she drove, we got a ticket in Utah.
So I was napping, and then woke up to a concerned wife...she apparently made a sudden lane change that caught the eye of a California Highway Patrol. He was instructing her to exit the freeway with his PA, and she was too panicked to listen,..each time angering the cop more.
Finally, as we pulled over, he comes yelling that he was majorly pissed off at us and whether we understood english--to be truthful, hearing what he was saying on the freeway even with the windows down, wasn't very clear. Anyhow, he actually let us off the hook with a warning. But one question he asked was whether I had an illegal aftermarket exhaust.
To me that seemed to imply their might be "legal" aftermarket exhausts. So I said what I felt was true that it was a legal aftermarket exhaust that was slightly modified from stock (my Invidia-but it wasn't visible because I had a cargo carrier on the back) so he just went by sound. I added that I wouldn't knowingly put anything illegal on my car. He asked if I had any papers and I said I didn't. I added that while my car is fast, we always obey the law. Finally as we're getting ready to leave, I apologized to the cop if my wife does a burnout here. We just got a new clutch and my wheels are kind of worn and she's not exactly used to the clutch. He just smiled and said ok.
Course, the wife said..you better drive now.
Like others have said..when I drive, although I've got an RMW header and Invidia exhaust, I try to keep the sound level down at stock levels for most of my driving and once in awhile, let them sing. The wife doesn't know how to drive the car that way so she attracts more unwanted attention without realizing it, IMO.

Im sorry but the goverment telling me what I can, and cant do is non sense. Thank god I'm in south carolina where my 110+DB RMW system is legal, along with running no cats and any other mods you want. When are we going to stand up against this country?
I also feel with a majority of states lead by Liberals more vehicle laws will be enforced.

What makes the headers illegal versus the cat-backs? Because they do away with the cat?
You're not supposed to touch the OEM cat unless it's malfunctioned. However I believe as long as the header is one piece with a CARB approved cat then it's ok.
Just found this link, very good info: http://www.arb.ca.gov/msprog/aftermk...es/amquery.php

Just to add an observation--I got a "modified exhaust" citation on an Albuquerque City ordinance the other day. It's a noise ordinance and I asked the officer if my exhaust was too loud, and he said it didn't matter--if the exhaust was modified I would get fined. Sounds like bunk to me, but we'll find out in a few weeks for sure...
A lot of states (Virginia comes to mind as amongst the worst) have ambiguously worded exhaust regulations which say things to the effect of "If an exhaust is modified in such a way so as to change the sound of the vehicle it is unlawful." These laws work alongside other ordinances (like a vehicle cannot emit a sound in excess of XX Db) and are nearly completely at the officers discretion. So a One-ball exhaust mod would be illegal in most states and since most aftermarket exhausts are a bit louder they're also illegal if the officer wants to push the issue. California adds in that the part has to have a CARB number even if the part has no impact on emissions (such as an intake) and is another rant for me entirely as it's California's way of taxing the vehicle aftermarket (and small businesses) by requiring expensive tests which do nothing to improve air quality.
Thats why I said " almost any cat-back" And
don't get me started on this quote,
"California's way of taxing the vehicle aftermarket (and small businesses) by requiring expensive tests which do nothing to improve air quality."
Me and Dr. Obnxs already went around on this.

And as for running without catalytic converters on public roads, that's a violation of federal law - it doesn't matter one bit what state you live in.
loooool !!! i love it .. those mass. folks are going to n.h. in droves cause of taxes . though when they get there they want mass. so they take over your govt. and raise taxes to create a new mass. too funny .
Totally wrong. You have NO rights at all. Take a look at the
"Bill of Rights" sometimes and actually read the words in the amendments. For example, there is NO right to the Freedom of Speech. Rather, the amendments says that the Congress shall not PASS a law to infringe upon free speech.
"Congress shall make no law ... prohibiting the free exercise ... of speech ..." http://usinfo.state.gov/usa/infousa/...cs/billeng.htm
The constitution does not "prohibit" what private citizens can do ... that authority fall within the Congress. Rather, the amendments "prohibit" what the Government can do.
Get used to noise laws ... they will become more frequent ... You pay you money and take your chances

Care to elaborate on the non-legitimacy of the Bill of Rights? From where I sit, it (and the other 17 Amendments) aren't separate from the Constitution, they're simply parts that were incorporated later and ratified by the individual states. In fact, the amendment process is specifically described in Article V of the Constitution itself.

Well I'm just a modern day outlaw aren't I, much like you and your illegal radar detector use ?
Just because you're ignorant of South Carolina's laws or choose to ignore them, that doesn't mean they don't exist. SC has excessive noise/muffler laws, tint laws, and most of the same laws regarding mods as the rest of the states.
And as for running without catalytic converters on public roads, that's a violation of federal law - it doesn't matter one bit what state you live in.

Sorry, I graduate in June, and my next duty station is back in Virginia, so I'll be leaving California for good soon.
Call me whatever you wish, but I personally feel that the attitude of "I'll make as much noise as I want to and pollute as much as I want to 'cuz I'm a free American, and to hell with everyone else" is an example of what's wrong with our society, not an example of what makes it great.
And HH - I'm still curious about your reasoning as to why the Bill of Rights "isn't a legal document" and is "not worth the paper it's printed on". I'm fully expecting you to come back with some jailhouse lawyer BS you found on "teh interwebs" about it not being valid because it was written in the wrong color ink or because some state was two days late in ratifying it.
