I'm with State Farm in Virginia. I think part of it that I have five vehicles and my house covered with them, and that I've been with them since 1986. (In fact, because my policy started as an offshoot of my parents' policy, my official 'policy start date' is 1975 or so). My policy also has a "guaranteed renewal" clause that I don't think State Farm even offers any more with new policies.

The premiums are pretty fair, too - $44/month for 100k/300k/100k liability/property damage, $100 deductible for comp, $250 deductible for collision, and 100k/300k/100k uninsured motorist coverage. That's on a 2006 MINI 'S' convertible.

I might be able to get cheaper rates elsewhere, but State Farm has always been *very* generous with claim settlements. They've even paid out on a few claims that they could have easily (and legitimately) denied.

U guys need to come up to Wyoming to get yr need for speed. If U have no warrants or priors--and the 65 or 75 mph highway is empty, which most are--troopers there only issue warnings to anything under 40 mph over. my cousin got popped for doing 102 in a 65 in his Magnum SRT/8 near Sheridan and escaped with a stern warning. I managed once to top my R53 on a deserted road near Lander, but only antelope herds grazing on the shoulder, not cops, slowed me down.

But anything 40+ over in a 65 or 75 is a $100 fine, and if y've been warned it's automatic jail time and breakfast with da judge.

That distance is only 550 miles (+/- a few), so avg of 73.33 mph

How about Charlotte to York ME: 950 miles (+/- a few) in 11.75 hrs.
I make this trip to visit my wife's family a few times a year and drive it straight through the night.
The key is NOT driving extremely fast, it is managing and minimizing your stops.

I recognize your car, I think we may work near each other.

Not to contradict the OP, and not to discount the X50, because I have never had one, but I haven't gotten a ticket by radar/lidar at all since buying the V1. Its hypersensitivity does produce lots of falses, and it does chatter a lot., but it picking up a weak signal in a place that the band is unusual for has saved me more than once. It seems well suited for me, though. I drive the same routes most of the time, and know what false signals to ignore. I have not taken a long road trip with it yet, so I don't know how useful it is in that situation. YMMV.

Ah Wyo, land of the free and home of the brave (and the Pokes). In AZ I think you lose your license for 6 if you get clocked over 100mph.

Well, considering that GA comes to a crawl because the entire state is under construction and traffic barely breaks 45mph for MILES on end, that number is a little construed.

I reset my speed before I left and I averaged 87.1 mph. Since you've done long distance runs, you know how driving over 100 miles at 45-60mph in a construction zone will kill your average. I had to spend time in triple digits to make up for it.

One of my bodyshops is in Indian Trail, I live in Mint Hill and go to Charlotte on a regular basis. If you ever see me, stop and say hi.

My annual runs are CLT-Youngstown OH, CLT-York ME, CLT-Bernardston MA, & CLT-Orlando. Try a long run at night and you might find it much easier. No sun, very little traffic, no 'are we there yet'- everyone but me sleeps.

Small world that one of your shops is literally across the street from my business.
See you around!

That's cool.... just out of curiousity, what do you go to Youngstown for? I graduated from YSU back in '85.

Small world indeed.

Mark

PS. Yes, I used to do night drives ALL the time... but as I get older, it gets harder. Typically, I still leave work around 5-6pm and drive straight through to Tampa. Most of the time, I'm with my family and my 7 1/2 hour drive turns into 11-12 with family.

Actually Girard OH to visit my wife's brother and his family.
I say Youngstown since most people have actually heard of it.

Y, that is us, leave at 7pm arrive in the NE in the morning.
MOST of the time the kids sleep until 5-6am.

I actually got a ticket driving CLT-Worcester MA for my wedding (yrs ago)
Volvo V70 T-5, 87 in a 55, 3 am in the morning, Wilkes-Barre PA.
I COMPLETELY deserved it and was ready to take my lumps.
I showed the trooper my wedding invitation which was two days later, and he gave me a warning!
I have found it always pays to make pleasant conversation.

You can find used ones fairly cheap on ebay in good condition.

Check out the reviews from this independent site. Radar

Here is a brief rundown found on google. You'll have to check for more accurate info.

Radar detectors are banned in Virginia.
Radar detectors and radar jammers are illegal in the District of Columbia.
Radar jammers are illegal in Oklahoma, but radar detectors are legal.
In New York, radar detectors are illegal for commercial vehicles over 18,000lbs.
In IIlinois, radar detectors are only regulated in commercial vehicles. </SPAN itxtvisited="1">
Just an FYI...

Radar jammers are illegal by federal law. Radar jammers create intentional radio frequency interference, and are therefore banned by the FCC. Besides that, it's a dead giveaway to a cop if you try to run a radar jammer, and since they know it's a felony, you're gonna be in worse trouble than what you'd get with a speeding ticket. "Passive" radar jammers are as effective as a lucky bobblehead doll on your dash.

Detectors and laser jammers differ by state. Laser jammers are also a dead giveaway, as the LIDAR device will either register a null reading, or the more recent creations, tell the officer that the device is being jammed with an error code.

So basically, know your state's laws and what they use to get an idea of what you need.

Personally I ended up getting an Escort 9500ix. Essentially it's the X50 with a GPS chip and upgradeable database. I love the auto-learn as my false alarm rate has dropped dramatically. The range is excellent as well. I know some folks love the V1, but like someone else said, I don't care where the radar is coming from, I'm more concerned with the fact that I'm seeing radar and the difference between my current speed and the speed limit.

Besides, the 9500ix has a nice blue display, which goes well with my blue themed MINI

Just a data point.
I have logged hundreds (thousands?) of hours with V1s all through Virginia since 1994 and can vouch it is stealth to the VG-2 (radar-detector detector).

Looks like it might not be stealth to the new Spectre RDD, use caution as that unit becomes more popular.

Yep yep, both the Escort and V1 gets found by the Spectre III.

Of course, if you need radar protection and you spend a lot of time in VA, the Beltronics STi is the only detector built specifically to not leak RF, and thus be invisible to the RDDs. Of course if you're like a friend of mine and sit the thing on your dash and the cop sees it, that doesn't help anything.

Now, THAT'S funny!!!!

A friend of mine got picked up in VA and forgot to hide his radar detector.

Not only did he get a ticket, the cop took the detector, placed it behind his back wheel and made him drive over it.

I can't believe a cop would go to that extreme but I guess it's better than getting another ticket for having an illegal detector.

I wanted to get the 9500 that gets hidden away like the old X40's. but I refuse to spend 1500-1600 bucks for a detector setup.

Oddly enough, I would wager a V1 could survive that and still function.
It is built to military specs in a magnesium case.

Shoot, I'd rather just pay the fine for having a detector. In Virginia, it's a $100 equipment violation (so no points), which is a lot less than my V1 (or pretty much *any* quality radar detector) costs.

In Hawaii doing 20mph over the speed limit gets you a trip to jail.

Here, 15 is enough to get your license pulled on the spot.

I have heard that for decades, yet never met anyone who lost their license on the spot in NC. And I have had 73/55, 64/45, and numerous others through the years. Once I told the officer I just got back from Germany and was having a hard time driving so slow and showed him my passport - no ticket LOL.

FWIW the wife and I currently have perfect records and 0 points.

Your driving privilege will be revoked for at least 30 days if you are convicted of:
  • driving any vehicle more than 15 mph over the speed limit, if you are driving at a speed higher than 55 mph.
NC apparently has seriously strict traffic laws...

Grey,

The deal is, they can pull your license, it's not that they have to but have the option.

Here's a little bit of information most people don't know.

If you get pulled doing 15+mph in a 55+ speed limit and they want to pull your license on the spot, you HAVE the right to post bail right there on the side of the road.

Not many people know that but it's good to know if the need arises.

Just for the record, other than getting pulled for running 169mph (long story but didn't get a ticket) I have no tickets on my license.

They won't pull your license... a few years ago when I was an incredibly stupid driver, I got caught, No Radar Detector, doing 140mph in a 65, South Texas.

Big whoppin' ticket, but nothing else. I have a clean record, so maybe that is it... dang... that was when the wife was my girlfriend, and I was being introduced to her Mercedes-Benz. Now those cars feel sedate at speed... the fun just wasn't worth the $400+.

Since then, I've slowed down a whole lot, and drive a lot safer. Pretty nasty videos during the Driver's Training Segment of my five month Academy will do that!
