Drivetrain Twin Charge on the track
I had hoped for a close race at Laguna Seca, the first nearly-all MINI race I have seen. I have been on about 10 different tracks with my MINI, driven against ALL kinds of cars, some slow, most fast and most "race prepped" in the expert run groups ...
The Webb mule and Randy were very fast, hardly applied any brakes and put a smile on everyones face there (Except the other drivers) as he battled the vette.
I can only hope to compete at that level some day in my MINI !!!!
Personally, I wish there were other MINIs and drivers there that were as fast or faster -- there were not, He is possesed at the wheel !!

Pics tell the story to some extent ... The Line Up and Pace Car to the right

At the running start:

Randy out in front after a lap or two:

The Corvette takes over after a few laps of heated battle, neck and neck:

Corvette goes on to win and Randy breaks a belt, limps back to pits, Original race MINI ends up with a great win over the new MCS:

Actually, during his time, Bruce Lee could beat anyone. Bold statement I know. But no one ever proved it wrong.
Same thing with Webb.
Motosport, and sellem, if Webb can be beat, let's see it.
He is your daddy until proven otherwise.
I still got a hundie on the lil man with the red and black gloves.

I love it when Camelpilot instigates.

And just to add my .02 ¢. Just like in any other sport, any body can beat any one on any given day. And I think Bruce Lee would woup Randy's butt.
If anyone is gonna start talking about someone else's ability to drive - they better be willing to say their the better driver. To be honest I'd bet that most folks here on this board haven't pushed their Mini to it's fullest limit even in stock form & where it isn't the car doing all the work. Most of the time - I bet it's the Car bitching about it's driver being a ******* behind the wheel and not knowing how to drive. Just imagine what our cars have to say.
Thats my 2 cents....

Lets see here 8K miles gets you 3 track days, 100 trips down the 1/4, 60 dyno pulls and then a few other drives. Not to forget all of the different "experiments" the car had.
I havn't ever seen Randy drive so I can't compary him to me. I am just saying he is not the BEST out there. Becasue that is a rediculous statement. I am sure Randy would love to drive profesionally and with the money in the motorsports world they wouldn't let the best talent in the world slide by.
I like how everyone laughs about Camels ability to stir things up with his tom foolery's. (oh yeah, now look at the big brain on me). There are plenty of other peoplewho come to this board only to stir things up too!
And until somebody dethrowns me I guess I am the KING of MINI Drag racing... Now who is whose daddy!!!

Plus, I am king of everything.
Put me in the driver's seat of one of the MNS Spec Mini's. I'll take the turns @ 100 MPH, stick that #$%^ and get the job done, for the win! Why doesn't someone bet a $100 on me? I'm pretty good at Need For Speed. I preach the gospel of JM! We should go to F1 sometime for fun. Who's going to Firebird tomorrow?

WOW! I have had a few people point me to this thread - sheesh!
Here's a few points I'd like to make:
I know some of the best drivers in the world who have never gone pro - other priorities make it impossible (family being the first). Bob Boileau, John Forbes, Jamie Busby, Kevin Wheeler, Rick Buhl - all have not pursued a racing career but certainly had the talent to.
I know there are other drivers faster than me out there, period. I think I am good enough to test any of them on any given day - and if I didn't feel that way I wouldn't be fast.
Our car is one of the best track prepped cars in the country - we've proven it with numerous fields of competition.
I'm not sure who has the private track out in Arizona, but there were certainly quite a few high rollers at Laguna Seca from AZ - great guys that were good competitors (we even helped Mark get his car back on the track after a mechanical issue during practice). I hope they come out to the other Phil Wicks events, but they run a lot of the NASA MINI Challenge events, and they thought they would probably have conflicting schedules for most of the season. For the record, the pole was won by over a second, and we only got faster during the race.
I am not a very secretive guy. My plan for the upcoming events are to run the car with the stock supercharger for reliability. I know it works, and we don't want to start a season with any unknowns. I am shedding as much weight as possible, and hope to make the car faster that way.
Which brings me to another point - finishing is a key component of racing! If our belt fails, even if it is because of uncontrolled circumstances (in the case of Laguna Seca, a rock wedged into the AC compressor pulley), we still don't get points. I applaud any driver who comes out with a car that is reliable even if it is not blindingly fast - the McLaren was clearly the fastest car in '05, but it was Remault and Alonso who came away with the championship in Formula 1.
I love racing - it is a religion for me. I haven't been able to always participate at the full level that I have wanted to due to other priorities (I have a smokin' hot wife and four beautiful kids), but I have raced with sponsorship in the past and have participated and been competitive in pro events. Like I said earlier, if you don't think you are good, you won't be. That doesn't mean I am cocky (though I self-admittedly am a bit), but I think it helps as a competitor to be sure of your abilities.
Any of the guys who race know that it is a family - you would go out of your way to make sure another of your fellow racers will make the event. There isn't a lot of non-well intentioned crap being thrown around by the competitors. I want everyone to have the best equipment and drive the best they ever have - that's when it is the most fun. That is what racing is about - not beating everyone else, but doing the best for yourself, and knowing nothing was left on the track - getting into that almost Zen state where it is only the car and the track, and the rest of life is interrupted.
Am I the best driver of a MINI on a road racing course? On any given Sunday, I could be - and so could any number of other drivers. That's what makes it as addicting as it is! I plan on winning and going to Spa in Belgium this year, and I will fight with everything I have to do it, but I am not going to say it is a lock - hell I wouldn't even bet on it (I know how fickle the racing gods are).
I do have a video of Laguna Seca from in the car - it is a blast to watch! I would love any help with hosting it, starting with what to use to download it from the camera to the computer (it is a Sony and uses DV tapes).
I hope everyone has fun with this thread - I know I enjoy the banter - just know my viewpoint of being a racer, and that I certainly know (my wife and Brian@WebbMotorsports remind me all the time) that I don't walk on water (though I've been know to - it's cold enough here in Colorado to do it
).
I hope to see you all, spectators and competitors alike, next year. It should be fun - and that's why we all love these little cars anyway
.
