Cooper-ed Mini: John Cooper Works to offer boost package for Cooper S

Need boost? The Mini Cooper S can now pack 200 hp, thanks to a factory-warranted upgrade.

Mini Cooper S owners seeking an extra dose of power soon will be able to turn to none other than Mini’s namesake power broker, Britain’s John Cooper Works, for a factory-warranted upgrade that boosts the S from 163 hp to 200 hp.

BMW/Mini will debut the kit at the Geneva show next month. Customers will be able to buy the upgrade immediately after the U.S. announcement in New York in April. The kit will be available through designated Mini installers as a new-car option or as a retrofit on used Cooper S models.

Anyone know what this upgrade would consist of? I would imagine intake, exhaust, ECU and pulley...anything else? Any thoughts? I wonder if you already have an intake and exhaust if the other items could be purchased individually, i.e. cafeteria style? Anyone in the "know"?

I saw the article. I think most of us did - we've been discussing this news for the past couple of weeks. I've heard it through a lot of sources now so it seems legit. It's the pricing that most of us are having the problem with, however.

Copied from mini2.com

I visited my local BMW / Mini dealer last night and was shown an email sent from John Cooper to their showroom. It stated the following on the upcoming JCW’s upgrade:

· Power will be at 210 bhp

· The ECU will be re-programmed

· A new oval style central pipe will replace the current exhaust (bit like the design on the boxter)

· A NEW supercharger will be fitted.

· It will be released at the Geneva Motor-show in March.

No cost for this was given, but it is still rumoured to be in the region of £3500-£3700. I would imagine that a new supercharger will account for the majority of this price.

This is pretty much all we know at this point. The info was released about 7-10 days ago. The latest price figure I've heard was just under 5k for the package. There's been nothing official from MINI yet but I suspect we'll see a very detailed press release at either the Geneva or New York auto show. In the UK they will be available from April on.

Here's some info from my site that was posted last week of anyone is interested: http://www.bridger.us/mini/?Y=2003&M...sPackageUSInfo

That is so awesome! $5K seems steep, but not voiding the warrenty is a damn good catch. Can't wait to see the release

Thanks Gabe - at $5000, we are actually getting a better deal than the UK (3700 lbs or ~ $6000).

My curiosity is whether that includes installation - I have been told it does not .

The "just under 5k" figure was heard from a dealer so I suppose we should take it with a grain of salt. That being said we tend to always get a slightly better deal than our UK friends so it doesn't seem out of the realm of possibility. Of course a bigger question would be whether or not you consider 5k a good deal to begin with.

It seems to me that an new 04 with the JCW package installed as a "factory" option should be cheaper than 5k plus installation. That would make more sense, and resale wouldn't be so brutal if you wanted or had to sell. Just my .02.

Now does that $5000 (give or take) price tag include install?
I can just imagine what the dealer would charge to install a new
supercharger.

I talked to my dealer today. He said they have finally gotten some kind of info on the JCW package. It's going to be $5000 US plus installation. They guess labor at between 2-3 K. What a joke. They made this statement after telling me the pricing: "I don't think we are going to sell many of those." Well duh.

· Power will be at 210 bhp....ok we all like this part

· The ECU will be re-programmed: $800 from what i hear

· A new oval style central pipe will replace the current exhaust (bit like the design on the boxter) QS has the same tip ...and the cost is $800

· A NEW supercharger will be fitted. ???Haven't a clue on this one?????

· It will be released at the Geneva Motor-show in March. which is next month now...!!!!

here's my question ...how does this all add up to $5K??????

$5K + $2K install? This is the ultimate disappointment.
I was over @ Helix this past Friday and let me tell you that their setup is bitchin'. They've got the pulley (looks like a piece of art) and they are waiting on a chip. The pulley alone has not caused any issues to date and the addition of the chip should complete the package.
I think I'll be going this route soon.

PS - The guys at Helix are way cool. They've got fantastic labor rates and they do thorough work. Highly recommended.
