MCS vs. RX-7

I have a friend that just got a '92 or '93(?) all black Mazda RX-7. It's pretty sweet, if your into that scene. He was giving me all sorts of crap on how he is going to beat me when we drag race (@ the local drag strip) this spring now b/c of his new ride. Once he does all the mods and stuff he'll have it 0-60 in the low fives. I'm looking to have around 260chp in my MINI by June or July. All this without twincharge. I'm wondering with all this hp will it drop my 0-60 time in or around where his will be? If not is there anything I can do where I can?

You might beat him...if its' a NON TURBO!!

Honestly man if its a 3rd gen (93-95) then it's twin turbo. Bone stock it'll still kick a JCW MCS's *** in the quarter. If he's doing mods on top of that then forget it. Just bolt on's on a 3rd gen will give well over 300 to the wheels! If its a Turbo 2 RX7 (mid 80's to 92 i think) then it will have a single turbo. Not as fast as the 93+ but still enough to take a MCS providing both drivers are competant. If your lucky than he'll be a non turbo then you can feed it to him!

Trust me man...I work at a shop a little north of Toronto and we do quite a bit of work on rotary's. They're pretty sick engines just a little fragile at times. If it makes you feel any better I would love for you to prove me wrong!!! The guys I work with have been busting my ***** ever since i got the MCS in August/05.

What's your recipe for all of that power? I've seen preciuous few MCS's actually make all that without a turbo. Ok, ONE [at 8350 rpm...]!

Yea, the MINI is not really built as a stright line runner, but add a few curves and a turn here and there and then the Mini REALLY shines.

Says that almost all of the early - mid 90's RX-7's run about a 14.0 stock. If you have 260chp in your mini I think it would be a good race.

I think the mini has way more potential in the 1/4 than people give it credit for.

I have a 16% pulley, and an intake and pull on stock WRX's a good amount from a roll. Granted...thats not blazing fast...but it's not slow.

I've always been under the impression that RX-7s have very good handling. With a few minor mods, I've seen them pull 1+ g in magazine tests.

They do handle cracy. A buddy of mine races his in the Solos series and he usually kicks ***. Not to mention the fact that the RX7's usually clean up at all the drift competitions.

A little research would show that the RX-7 third-generation cars run in a considerably higher class than the MINI in every type of racing. There is a good reason for this - the RX-7 is a powerful, aerodynamic car with excellent suspension - a civilized version of a racing machine.

Sorry guys, but (having owned both cars) the Rex is much faster stock or modified, handles better, and puts all its power on the ground, as it is rear-wheel drive with 50-50% weight distribution.

It's major soft-spot in handling is that the power steering is numb and often a bit laggy, as it is apparently designed for stability at 150mph - it's a road-racer, not a go-kart.

A 650hp RX7 does the quarter mile in the 9 secs range... well do the math and you know that its made to beat Skylines.

I've seen a video of one of those actually pull more once it got to 200km/h

Try to compare the Mini to other front wheel drive cars.. yes they do pull fairly well, but I mean come on. I beat an X5 4.6ltr from 2nd gear upto top speed and that was exciting... he was drafting behind me and couldn't keep up. I still won't go against a Gemballa 750hp Cayenne.. it doesn't make sense.

Why doesn't the Mini handle like a Type R.. weight.. its too heavy for its size and it amazes me to see it move. Its got torque which gets it moving. The tyres get all the pounding.... I spend alot of $$$ on them.

I say keep each to its class... Check the drag strips.. different classes

a stock RX-7 will bit your mini as it is, specially out the line.
now you add CAI, exhaust and a turbo timer and you will not be able to even see the tail lights when he brakes after kicking you butt.
one of my friend has one and even autocrossing I cant get him..... although I am sure I can carry a higher speed on the actual corner as soon as that REX gets going in done...
he is pushing about 330 to the wheels... Im doing about 200 hopefully.
Even when we roll he pulls a good 4 to 6 cars from 60-110...

in any case he might not know how to drive...

Bench racing sucks...

He bought a sports car, and you didn't. I wouldn't spend to much effort trying to keep up with him. Given equal dollars spent, you're always going to be slower. I wouldn't stress over it... if you'd been that serious about drag racing you probably would have bought a different car.

I've always wanted a 7. I've never learned enough about them to make an informed purchase though. IMO, they should be reagarded as one of the all-time-greats.

Is that why a lot of the people remove the power steering on RX-7s? How would removing the power steering affect th RX-7s handling?

It would make it more direct and positive. Any light sportscar doesn't need power steering. My friends MR2 doesn't have it and the feedback is amazing. I'd pull the PS fuse on the MINI if BMW had made it a bit lighter ; )

I had a SC MR2. No power steering.

Pulling the fuse is the wrong way to go about it though... removing the pump (and about half the fluid), looping the lines, and ideally allowing an overflow tank decreases the effort tremendously.

Yeah his car is going to be fast! But tell him he needs to be very cautious with everything engine wise on that car! I have heard a lot of horror stories about the motors going. But if set up right and is taken well care of, everything should be ok.

Overall though, I've heard the RX7 is one of the most reliable engines around, being a rotary design which has less moving parts and all. Mybroscoop, you may be speaking of highly modded RX7 engines, which are pushed hard in racing events. It is one of the most raced cars, or used to be anyway, and I've heard won more races than just about any other car. So, yes it's a sports car that is in a different category than the MINI. The MINI is great for what it is, and as said, the steering on the MINI is awesome, a real go cart, and very fun to drive. I still get very excited when I drive it.

I am old enough to have known better than to have purchased the RX7 when they were new, but I bought one anyway. Red. Mine was the more sporty of two models so a sunroof was not available but a grotesque airfoil was mandatory. It was the most competent performance car I had driven. Everything felt tight and precise. Styling was brilliant--even completely different door handles and switches for driver and passenger doors. Average gas mileage was around 15. I am gratified to see a few clean and modified ones still on the streets.

Yeah, thats the Achilles heal of the rotary engine. As the rpm's grow, the amount of blow-by increases as well. Gas mileage is horrible.

Well here's my key to making that much horsepower:

FTR Head: According to AGOKART, who I spent time with today, it's good for 30hp
Alta CAI
Alta SC Pulley 15%
Alta Crank 2%
Milltek Exhaust
Milltek Header
Nologys
Pilo Coil
IK22s
Uni-Chip
Intake Man. of some sort
Larger Injectors
Intercooler(???)
LSD

I have added everything up and through various sources I have come up with anywhere from 265-273chp

Not to diss this kid or anything but I doubt he is smart enough to do any susp. work besides slamming it to the ground, and that's not always the best thing for handling.

Mikey
