CAI air box dimensions

I'm customizing a cold air intake on my 06 MCSa and need some help from some of you that have them.
I'm going to fabricate a heat shield for the filter and I notice that it is less height at the hose end than it is at the cowl.
Can someone post the height of thier Alta or box at the cowl and at the hose inlet.
I plan to mount it to the bottom of the stock airbox and leave the air inlet tube connected and I will cut out a window in the the cowl for fresh air.
I'm going to be using an Air Raid K&N cone filter from my totaled 03 Dodge Dakota. It has been laying around the garage so I figured why not use it.
I will have to step it down from 4" to 2" and it sits in the box just fine.
I'm going to do a DIY w/pics. It could be done using a K&N RX 4950 filter which goes for $68.00 and wouldn't need to be stepped down.
Much less than $200.00 for a piece of sheet metal and a couple of hoses.
Help me out with some measurements please.

I did this same project 2 years ago. To get the dimensions you are looking for I used clay stacked on the stock filter box to get the profile of the hood underside. Then you make a cardboard version of the sheet metal part and check your dimensions/clearance. I shouldn't take that long to develop the correct cardboard version. When you are happy with the fit, use the cardboard to layout the shape on the sheet metal. I used .050" thick aluminum as it is easy to bend using a vise and your hands. Here's a picture of mine.

You can get the seal material from McMaster-carr. I did a custom tube that is bigger in diameter for increased air flow but it's really not needed if you are going lowbuck. Good luck with your project.

What did you make the tube out of?
And where did you get it?

This weekend I will post a drawing of the flat sheetmetal part and the tube I used. The tube has to be machined down to fit the stock flex hose but would work as is with the Alta silicone hose. The tube I used was .25" wall aluminum tubing I bought at a local supply house. On the first prototype I sanded down the small end using a belt sander but the rest of the ones I made a friend machined them on a lathe. Either way worked but the machined tubes look better.

Aluminum might not be the best material from a heat transfer point of view but is much easier to work with if you are limited in metal working tools. I will also post better pictures.

K&N or Foam Filter

So, what's the word: Is a Foam filter safer/better than a K&N paper filter?

K&N filters are made of washable reusable cloth.
I prefer the K&Ns.

Foam filters are washable and reusable as well.
Each have their advantages and work well.

I have used K&N fillters for decades but I am also quite happy with the Uni Filter that came with my Alta. It's almost 2 years old and is fine. Been cleaned twice.

They do. They make a heatshield and intake house. But in this case I believe he is trying to save some $
