Alta's new Turbo Kit

[FONT=Arial]Featuring a Garrett GT3071R turbo, ALTA™ has created an easy bolt on turbo kit for the MINI Cooper S that will make will produce up to 400 horse power. A 304 stainless steel tubular header directs exhaust gases through a Garret GT3071R turbo charger and a new 2.5" to 3" polished, stainless steel, down pipe which bolts to the stock cat back exhaust or any direct replacement systems. ALTA's placement of the turbo down low in the engine bay increases clearance for the firewall and under hood components. 5 layer silicone intake hose guides air through a new foam filter element to the turbo charger. Delivering excellent airflow the silicone hose smoothly increases in diameter from the 3" filter opening to the huge 4" turbo inlet housing. Polished boost tubes stretch from the turbo charger to the throttle body while a PERRIN Performance vent to atmosphere blow off valve relieves additional boost pressure. The ALTA kit includes: a polished tubular exhaust manifold, polished mandrel bent down-pipe, Garrett Turbo charger, polished boost tubes, PERRIN performance blow off valve, oil and water lines, foam filter element, air box, silicone intake tube. How soon til they release the standalone system? A date and a price would be nice. Also why so little effort in the design of the exhaust manifold? Downpipe and intercooler pipes and nice and shiny, nice bends but that turbo manifold is...well rather ugly to be blunt.

saifa,
The Standalone is coming along quite well. I think we can ship units in about a month. We will be developing maps for all cars, pulleys, TC kits.... and when we have base maps for all those we will ship them out. The ECU is going to be $1200-2000 depending on options. We will give more of the details the closer we get.

On the manifold, the design shown here is a prototype that we used for the pics. We had enough people asking that we quickly took some pics which were before the final part was done. The header actually is very similart but polished. The placement of the turbo, in relationship to the head dictates that the header be designed a certain way. And there are only so many ways to get from head to turbo. As long as it is somewhat smooth it will work just fine. Expect a nicer pic to be there in a week or so.

looks to me like a pic their yet-to-be-released twincharger kit. I's not so easy to ditch the SC: requires water pump change, including hoses, possibly re-locating the alternator, serpentine belt changes, etc. if they have that worked out, kudos.

Sorry if i made it seem like that is a turbo only kit. That is our new TC kit. So the SC is still there. Sorry!

Yeah this thing looks pretty promissing. I'm looking forward to seeing what peoples opinions are on it. So it doesn't come with any kind of ecu tuning right?

bluesmini,
It is part of the kit. So it is required, but required to purchase.

benthevegan,
No ECU is required because the low boost setting is about the same as a 17% pulley as far as boost goes.

Sorry, no standard turbo kit yet. But with the other problems people have i think Standard owners should think twice about installing one.

Is that the final downpipe design?

I could be mistaken, but it appears to go from 2.5" to 3", then back to 2.5" after the flex-pipe. If this is the case, why go to 3" at all? Personally, I'd prefer it 3" all the way, but definitely at the exhaust flange - or at least offer two options. If I'm going to spend that much on a turbo kit I might as well put a custom 3" exhaust on there as well.

So are you saying that you have to have a reduction pulley for this kit but you have to buy the pulley seperately . Would it have to be yours or could we use another brands. Does it have to be 15% or can it be m7's 16%? Oh and how long is it covered for manufacturer defects? Thanks.

As far as boost goes, since there are no ECU tuning or fuel management changes, will it be fine to run the TC kit with the stock IC and injectors? or is an upgrade reccomended?

Also, I believe it has been shown with the other kit on the market that it is beneficial to upgrade the engine internals to handle the added stress. Is this your reccomendation as well?

i was talking about the S/C pulley being bigger not smaller than stock. just a question though. i was concerned about the amount of boost you can push through a twin charged system.

JeffS,
Yes, and no. the DP does change to 2.5" because the system has to fit stock exhaust systems. The turbo outlet is actually smaller than 2.5". In the end the larger pipe doesn't change much and was done just to make it as big as possible. Our future 3" exhuast will also neck down to 2.5". This sounds bad but the short 2.5" section will not effect overall HP.

benthevegan,
The Kit comes with our Larger SC pulley. This produces less boost from the SC but we up the boost from the Turbo! It is the same as our other pulleys just larger!

Minimort,
You got it, but the IC will surely help. The charge air still needs to be cooled off! But yes since the boost is relatively low with this setup those parts are not NEEDED. But, Big But, with the ECU we are developing, the larger 550cc injectors, and Manual Boost Controller will allow much higher boost levels. With this said we will offer maps tuned to certain boost levels that will offer WHP levels where engine internals won't be necessary. But we will always recommend them.

So more boost through the Turbo, less boost from the SC= more efficent charge, and more HP!

Cost estimates?

Hey Alta... just curious what cost range this kit may fall in complete... and did I read that right, 400 hp? 300 on it's own would be amazing, but 400? Is that presuming that internals WERE redone to handle such high boost to achieve these power levels? That get's expensive. I'm just curious what everyone thinks is a "safe" level of power and boost to run without really dealing a blow to longer term reliability.

I have loved every Alta product I've purchased... so my faith in Alta is high. I just am curious to learn much more to decide which direction to take the car.

Their site lists 3999 as the listing price, and this is in line with what they told us at TMMZ at SEMA. See the thread- people _were_ skeptical. Props to them for carrying through with the price point.

When you read stuff like that it's basicaly saying the turbo is capable of supporting "blah hp" before it is past its peak efficiency. It does not mean strap this kit on and you can run 400hp.

Personally looking towards that high of HP I would consider scraping the supercharger, going turbo only and making a kick *** intake manifold or something to that effect. I'm no mechanic but to me turbo and supercharger on a little 1.6L seems kind of much especially considering what I'm reading is guys looking for maybe less than 300whp

Ohhhhhhh ok, a LARGER sc pulley, that makes a lot more sense. I couldn't understand why you would run a reduction pully with a turbo that size..........I never even thought that you were talking about a bigger pulley..duh . Why did you guys choose to sell the pulley seperately? Why not just add it to the kit? You did say it was nessesary right? Oh yeah, you still haven't answered my question though: will there be a warranty against manufacture defects and if so how long does it last?
