I just received my copy of Autoweek and they report that the 200hp. kit for the "S" will be available in April "through designated Mini installers as a new car option or as a retrofit on used Cooper S models". This upgrade is reported to be factory warranted.

http://www.autoweek.com/search/searc...1&record=1

The Article:
Mini Cooper S owners seeking an extra dose of power soon will be able to turn to none other than Mini’s namesake power broker, Britain’s John Cooper Works, for a factory-warranted upgrade that boosts the S from 163 hp to 200 hp.

BMW/Mini will debut the kit at the Geneva show next month. Customers will be able to buy the upgrade immediately after the U.S. announcement in New York in April. The kit will be available through designated Mini installers as a new-car option or as a retrofit on used Cooper S models.

________

My hunch is that this is the "RS" version that some people have been told about by their dealers.

But at $6000 - ouch! I would rather void the warranty and get more hp for half the money - then make repairs as needed with the saved cash (actually, that is what I did ).

Gabe, do you know if that is installed?

Thanks for the info!

Randy

I would hope that it would be less than 6k for the US market. Myabe $5995 . Seriously I'm not sure if that's intalled or not. I would hope that was the case be but knowing how much MINI charges for some of it's aftermarket items I wouldn't be too surprised if you need to pony up another $250 for installation.

I think it'll sell fairly well at the 4k mark but 6k is probably out of many peoples comfort zone. Randy you make a great point in saying that you can get a lot more for less - Ultimately I think it's probably one that many people will use to talk themselves out of buying the kit

$250?? They'll probably charge standard price - $70 an hour for labor, at least. You're looking at somewhere around $700 with that new supercharger install. Maybe I'm just being pessimistic. It cost me $300 to install $250 springs on my current car. :???:

$250

Seriously, if it is less than $1000 to install it would be a miracle.

I also doubt that the price includes installation.

$6000 it´s a lot of money. For $3000 you can upgrade to 220 hp with aftermarket pieces.

i will not pay $6000 for the 200hp upgrade, but i will tell you what i will do though. i would probably motor a little more often--trying to get close to 36K miles. that's when i'll go crazy with the mods. by then, there might be a 250hp upgrade. if not, i'll stick with the "well north of 200hp" kit that randy's talking about.

bbt4
electric blue MCS w/20K more miles to go. who know, i might get sooner than that.

$6000 dollars is rediculous. Cold air - $230.00 (8hp) + Magnaflow
$700.00 (10hp) equates to 181hp for about 1000.00. Throw in a
reconfigured ECU (take your pick for under a thousand) and your
going to smoke the "Works" cars for WAY less money. I've already
done it and could'nt be happier.

I'd urge everyone to keep in mind that the US price has not been set for the JWC kit and not to jump to many conclusions at this point. $6000 figure purely based on the UK price - which isn't neccassarily what were going to end up paying in the states.

We're not even 100% sure what we'll be getting over here. It looks as if the UK JCW kit consists of:

But until we see a press release with US pricing and performance figures we should treat this news as unofficial by all means.

that works pakage is a bounch of bs for 6k no offense to anyone that does not feel my way but it is still a new car so you know when more companies come out there will be higher numbers of ponie power and less money numbers but randy has a good pakage over at minimotorsports so that is where i am headed.

    Hey katnkevin!

Did you do the instal yourself on the upgrade? How long did it take to turn around your ECU?

I would have to assume (big assumption) that quoted UK prices include VAT, and that the US$ equivalent will be much less than US$6k. Compare UK Mini prices to US, for instance.

Throw this into the category of "I'll believe it when I see it"

Seriously, wasn't this wonderful magical mythical kit once suppose to be available back in December (maybe even October if my memory serves me correctly).

The kit is being installed begining in April of this year for those in the UK. Word is that it will be available for order in the US as a retrofit, dealer installed kit or for new cars shortly after that.

US pricing has not been announced and probably won't be until the Geneva or more likely New York auto shows.

I've been in communication directly with JCW for several months on this. They had intended to launch in January, but then BMW wanted some very extensive durability testing before they would approve. This pushed back the launch until March at Geneva show. JCW has been very open and communicative on the subject, but you just had to ask them! Getting info from the dealers is not the way to go, since we know more than most of them at this point.

Let's see, car was about $25000, add $6000 that would get me a 31000 car!!!!
What are these people thinking???? For $32000 you could get a Honda s2000 with 240 horsepower and a convertable top.

I think if they release this here at that price there going to be a little disappointed with the response. But who knows, there are plenty of folks out there that bought a cdchanger for $600 or floormats for $100 or paid $4000 over MSRP or etc. etc. etc.

$6000! OUCH! That's about $160 per horse power over the stock S. That's quite a bit worse than the $ per HP ratio of a WRX STi over the stock WRX.
