considering twin charge

I know I said I would not but I am considering twin charge. I would like to hear from people who have experience with this, either currently own it or have a friend who does, or has driven it or seen it perform etc. I'm not talking theory or value judgement based opinions here cause these are not theoretical $s if you know what I mean........ Since the vendors for this are VERY limited, if you would like to do this via PM or phone calls that is fine maybe preferable. The Helix system gets 250 whp on his dyno which I am finally of the opinion is impossible with normal SC operation (I believe I have earned the right to express that opinion)....... I am concerned about reliability, service, day to day drivability, clutch. etc.. Another issue is wheteher to sell SpiderX and get an 05 or newer with an LSD and the new tranny?

Bob...the two people I know of who have "intimate" experiences with the TC are Jan (aka El Diablito) and Zak (our local member, Maximusmini). I can help you get in touch with both of them if you're serious. PM or call me...

SpiderX,

I think a member on this forum was running a twincharged setup and blew his engine... PM me if you can't find his username, but I'm sure a quick search will give you more details...

And you'd have to remove your s/c pulley..?

That was Maximusmini who's since rebuilt his motor with forged pistons along with few other expensive bits. I think he broke a motor mount since getting back on the road...man that sucks to have your toy in the shop so often

Shorter gears are not what you need for a TC car...that aside...people have spent thousands on parts and install for pulley cars and made a max of 220 to the ground if your are lucky...yet for close to the same money and a bolt on you can make alot more...

reliability is relative...I strapped a turbo on to a car and drove it out to cali , up and down the town 100 miles a day minimum, then back...haven't had a hitch...and it's making 26 lbs of boost at 5k so I had to short shift it...cause that's not good on pump gas. Yet the myth is it's not reliable.

If you get educated on it...as in learn what it is you want to achive HP wise and what it will take to do it "reliably" then you will surely be fine.

What I mean is...if you know you want more than say the normal 250 WHP then get pistons....also, if you get the TC...then Watch your boost...if you are spiking anything over 25 lbs of boost on 91 octane and are reving over 5k you are going to loose a piston...it's just a matter of time...and well...LOL...TIMING...the stock timing is too advanced for that kinda boost on 91.

for the few stories you have heard about people having problems...there are over 30 no problem stories...

they drive just like the SC mini with alot more Kick...having driven the one to Cali and back from AZ a day after having installed it...I am very impressed...especially since I didn't have time to tune the car and it was runing rich...yet started up and drove no prob every day...

So I think you need to ask you self one thing...what are you looking for...why are you considering it...and most of all...do you have the budget..

you get what you pay for....get the cheaper kit...well...then you get the cheaper kit

oh and think...the supposed 256hp (not WHP) kit for a pulley car (which has yet to be made to the ground) is some $8200.00!!! yet for the same money you cna bolt on a turbo and be making 250 to the ground and you are just starting...

OH I forgot to mention.... it sure was fun blowing the doors off modded STIs and an EVO 9....especially being that I was short shifting...LOL...WOW! I can't wait to drive one that's dialed in...

I had guys follow me off the Highway just to find out "what it is"

As there only two TC kits available, I'm curious which "cheaper" kit you're referring to?

I had no idea that there are over 30 TC'd Mini running around

My concern with these systems is the heat between the motor and firewall. Is this an issue or just another myth?

as for heat...I didn't notice any heat difference...I am not saying it's not there...cause the Turbo is on that side...but so is the header...and well...I have seen my header glowing at night after doing some spirited motoring...heh heh

as for price Helix...Alta is still up in the air to my knowledge...and there is Hubie's Kit...I have heard hubies is a little more but comes with more so...it's kinda irrelevant I guess...LOL

I can not find any of the old posts with #s...ofcourse I only did a few searches...and I am not sure what I did with the ones I saved over the yrs...heh heh...I'll look tomorrow...

all in all it's all about what YOU the user are looking for...

as for what kit is best...having installed a few now...I can not tell you the UNREAL quality and engineering/machining of parts that went into Hubie's kit...seriously...I was blown away...when I asked him why he didn't list it all he just shruged and said "why?" he's a moddest guy...and lemme tell ya...if I was to list every little thing he has had custom made so that the kit would fit just right you'd be impressed...

this doesn't mean it's best...I am just speaking what I have seen behind the curtain....he really thought about EVERY little thing...just amazing

I believe that I can add a little here. The Alta kit, when we spoke with them, was aiming for low 4k. They're intending to be the cheapest. They already had a lot of money and experience with tuning EVOs and STIs [they are the same company as Perrin] and a lot of stuff "done" in house, so they can make that low price point- that is the impression we got. We got a lot more info from them, but this isn't the place. If you're curious, I'm sure you'll find your answers soon. I can't say where/how right now.
