Who is the loudest? And is it to loud?

Hey guys,
I am looking into purchasing a exhaust for my mini, but I am wanting the loudest exhaust that you can get in terms of bolt on mods. I have been reading the exhaust thread and I have gotten a little confused in terms of what is actually the best and what is actually the loudest. Has anyone had any personal experience with what they would consider the loudest exhaust? and if so is it unbearablly loud or is it a nice tone? I am wanting the closest thing to a race exhaust that is street legal. Thanks any info would be appreciative. The Borla I heard is the loudest but it did nto sound that loud in terms of the clips that were shown that is why I am asking for personal experience. Thanks

Magnaflow

The Magnaflow is considered the loudest MC(S) exhaust available. It also makes around the most power.

I have a Magnaflow and it is louder than anything else I have heard. Mine is just the back section welded to the stock pipe. No drone and in-cabin noise isn't bad.

It's a nice deep tone, no tinny sound so it's not sounding like a "fart can"

Also, even though I'm runnig mine with no resonator, the noise is still more than acceptable, especially with no back seats!

What about the resonator problems though? have they fixed this in the magnaflow now? What I mean is if I was to order a new one will they ship it with the old style resonator or the new one that does nto rattle as much?
Thanks

Within our local club, we have people with Magnaflo, early gen Miltek, later gen Miltek with header, Borla Race, modified Borla Race (16" glass pack resonator, enlarged custom tips) with header/head, Twincharged with custom 3" exhaust. Here's how I rank them from quiet to very loud:

1-early gen Miltek (relatively quiet)
2-Borla Race/later gen Miltek (mildly loud)
3-Magnaflo (mildly loud)
4-later gen Miltek with header (nice and loud, near perfect)
5-modified Borla Race with header/head (very loud and sweet but pushing it)
6-Twincharged with custom 3" exhaust (painfully loud...possibly illigal)

If you order one now, it should come with the new resonator, with no weld/rattle issues

I spoke with Magnaflow last week for a replacement resonator and they said they are going through a product redo. They are coming out with all new products for most of their product line. One is for the MCS and its better and with better quality resonator. So I will not get a better resonator till then.

So unless someone has one in stock with a new resonator you will have to wait to hear from Magnaflow when the new one comes out.

Can someone explain to me why people want loud exhaust on daily driver cars? All these kids go by my house with loud exhausts all day, and it is so inconsiderate.

I know, it's like when people have extra lights on the front of their cars, the light is too much and just unnecessary.

Right?

Who needs that much light?

Well, the difference is that lights can be turned off, and hopefully people who have extra lights (like me.. although mine aren't hooked up yet ) know when to use them and when not to.

My only issue with loud exhausts is that I see (or hear rather) so many people driving around with them, accelerating hard in neighborhoods at night, and generally just making a lot of disturbing noise.

That's more a function or the people though, not the type of exhaust. I'm guessing these are the same people who go around causing a ruckus no matter what.

loud

one of the atlanta minis has a "twister" exhaust with no resonator that is much louder than my 'flow. i do have the resonator on mine.there is a company called aeroturbine that is supposed to be quite loud as well. you could also check out the supertrapp line. happy hunting. BTW how much louder is the magnaflow w/o the resonator. i have a fairly new resonator as mine was rattling and it was replaced. no problems since.

minimort... you are probably right on that one. I get the feeling that the people I am talking about just don't have any respect for the people around them. They are out having fun, and don't care if they are waking people up at night.

Don't get me wrong.. I love the sound of a nice sports car exhaust as much as the next guy.. I just wish that people were more considerate with them. I guess that is my gripe.

Thanks guys for all your help, but when you are reffering to the Borla Race are you reffering to the Borla Sport? Or are they twodifferent exhausts? and if so I have not seen the race exhaust for sale anywhere. And in response to the post earlier about loud exhausts, I enjoy them because I race a BMW M3 GTR and therefore I am a die hard race guy that loves the sound of open exhausts. But then I have to remember that this is my street/track car that my wife will also be riding in every now and then. And does anyone knwo if DTM tipd are only for look or do they also help with keeping the exhaust "mist" off the back of the car. Thanks

Borla Race = Borla Sport. There is also Borla Street, which isn't as loud

and run on burble

i forgot to add earlier: with the trapp, you get a very pronounced run-on burble/cackle, like a wrc car. so even when you back off the throttle, you still get an audio treat!!!

I know I'm getting old when I read these posts, "What's the loudest?!?"

Reminds me of speakers in the 70's - "How loud does it go?"

Loud, but sounds like crap.

And don't even bother listening to sound clips online - there are so many variables that you can't even begin to compare.

What you SHOULD be asking is, " I like to drive twisties/drags/track or wherever, what exhaust will give me the best power gains for that particular style?"

The best thing you can do is go where the MINIs are, either a meet or a dealer with a good used inventory, and drive/listen for yourself. I know it's more of a hassle, but it's the only safe way to get what's best for you. Hell, if you're just looking for loud, just unbolt the exhaust system and run it uncorked. . .

I'll agree with UUnetbill on pretty much all he said. Especially on getting an exhaust for what you plan on doing. This is one of the reason i Run the Dual Trapps as seen in the photo by danielg. The trap exhaust is a tunable one so it can be adjusted to the style of driving Drag/ Autocross/ Twisties/ Town. The clips recorded by Greatbear and Rephyle from the Dragon 04 shoot out can be found at the following link post number 41. also here are the DB chart
http://www.mini2.com/forum/showthrea...dragon+exhaust

Borla Street: 89/95 – Quite mellow, very similar sounding to stock, but a touch more throaty.

Magnaflow: 89/101
Milltek: 89/101
Stebro: 91/101 – Not a favorite. Sounded similar to the One-ball, but not as raspy
Milltek header/Borla Street: 91/100
Milltek header/Milltek cat-back: 88/107
Milltek header/Borla Race: 88/105 – My favorite for the Cooper S. Great tone, great rumble without blowing out your ears.
Supertrapp Dual: 93/118 – WOAH! LOUD! A very loud tin-can

Classic Mini Cooper S – Play Mini cat-back: 108 peak – this systems sounded fantastic, and was a real crowd pleaser!
