WHP Reference Thread

I am proposing a new thread that will serve as a reference for benchmarking standard WHP findings in order to better estimate gains for folks who have gotten AFTER dynos but forgot to get BEFORE dynos (like myself).

What I am proposing is establishing a reference based on a range of commonly found WHP results by model year. Since the stock WHP of our cars can vary so widely, the more contributors we have the more accurate the reference will be. Again just to reitterate, the point is not to arrive at "Golden Number" but rather a RANGE of common WHP's for a give model year.

At some point we may also consider adding refernce ranges of WHP gains found with some of the more common mods ( ie you may expect to see gains of 10 to 15 WHP for a 15% reduction pulley).

As always the more information you can provide, the better. I would love any input on this. This is an ambitious project, so I am very open to guidance on the scientific aspects of this process...as I have no background here. What I expect is constructive discussion that is aimed at achieving the goal of the thread.

I have a 2005 MCS with the following performance modifications:

1. 15% Alta pulley
2. 62 mm Throttle body
3. MTH "racing map"
4. one-ball exhaust
5. ALTA CAI w/ silicone hose

My last dyno readings were on a dynojet.

Conditions:

1. Ambient temp 95 deg F
2. Hood open with 2 fans
3. IC cooled with ice bag
4. 95 octane fuel

Results:

1. WHP 194 @ 7100 rpm
2. Torque 176 @3700
3. A/F ratio between 4,000 - 5500 rpm = 11.5 - 13.5

I am getting a Milltek cat-back exhaust this Sunday at Bimmer's Clinic in Reseda, CA at a Randy Webb pulley party. I will re-dyno in the next few months

April 04 build MCS (23,000kms)

5 Aug 2005: Stock = 107.9kW (144.6whp)

9 Aug 2005: + ALTA CAI = 118.1kW (158.3whp)

+ Milltek = TBA

----------------------------------------------------------------
Runs done on same dyno, by the same operator.
Canberra is approx 580 metres above sea level.

I think that approximate elevation above sea level would be helpfull information as well since it can dramatically effect boost.

IMHO, it would be much more effective to start a campaign to encourage modders to remember to do baseline dynos on the same dyno where they plan to do their "after" pulls.

how about making a chart like Andy's 1/4 mile times, with column entries for whp and rpm, torque and rpm, IAT,ambient temp and humidty, ice-or-not on intercooler, A/F, and mods, etc?

what the hell, who needs to race?

2003 MCS, no base line,
GRS Intercooler, MTH, 15% Alta pulley, Alta intake w/o hose, Screamin Demon Coil Pack, Livewire Wires, Denso IK22s, Scorpion Exhaust

cnditions were about 74.55 farenheit during ian's run to about 76.26
humidity was between 22%-26%

Agreed. I have done this with my before/after runs.

I agree that your suggestion would IS the ideal way to proceed. Certainly that is the best way for gather acurate data. For the sake of continuing this project for later model years (06 and beyond) getting pre-mod dyno runs should definitely be encouraged. However, for 02 though 05 cars I believe that there is already plenty of data to tap into. I simply want to use this thread as a central place to gather and organize the available data.

The point is to give people an idea of what gains can be realisticly expected from some of the more common mods.

****THIS IS AN EXAMPLE. DO NO READ TOO MUCH INTO THE NUMBERS USED FOR THE EXAMPLE...AS IT IS JUST AN EXAMPLE****
Generic Pete can now read the reference and see that his 02 MCS should have between 145 and 155 WHP based on the range of numbers found by other members. He can then see that with brand X CAI he can expect a gain of 5 - 10 WHP. Pete can see what sort of HP gains can be made from a 15% reduction pulley.

Ultimately the goal is to give Pete an idea what he is working with and where common mods may take him in terms of HP gains...not so he can say my car has 185WHP. This information is really probably going to be most usefull to Pete as he makes decisions about where to go next with his modding or it may only serve the purpose of indulging his curiosity.

I hope that made sense.

As the data come in we can talk more about how to organize this information so that it is of maximum usefullness. We may want to categorize common WHP ranges based on things like model year and approximate elevation.

2004 MCS

Baseline runs: 102 degrees

162 WHP consistant

15%, CAI, UUC: some 90 something degrees and raining...so 100% humid...LOL it's an out door dyno...

Runs: 188 WHP all day!

oh and I put polished horns from a F355...I think that is where the majority of the HP came from...

next dyno..I dunno...heh he...I'll be intouch

That still doesn't make sense. If you have people reporting stock dynos ranging from 140 whp to 170 whp (done on wildly varying dynos and conditions) and then people with 15% pulleys reporting 150 whp to 190 whp (again done on wildly varying dynos and conditions, in most cases different from the stock dynos), then what useful data can you determine about the effectiveness of the 15% pulley?

Conversely, you have one or two people who do before and after dynos, showing the change from the 15% pulley on the same car, same dyno, etc. This shows actual change, not variances between dynos and methods.

heh heh...I just always heard the horns of the high end euro cars growing up so I cannot have a "performance car" if it doesn't have a performance horn...I just love it...

they are mounted above the exhuast to the right a little and since the horns are off a F355 I swear I got like 20 WHP...seriously...LOL
