Is the balance offset when you sit in the drivers seat? I think not......

Hmmm, good point... now that the driver side is twenty pounds lighter, I can gain some weight

In a hack mechanic's perfect world, the Mini's exhaust would have been designed as a mirror image of what it is now. That way the one-ball mod would have removed weight from the driver's side of the car, instead of the passenger side. However removing 20# from the car is still a good thing.

Re: welding on or off vehicle
Super Welder might be able to do it all on the vehicle, but most mortals are going to tack the pieces in situ and complete the welds off the vehicle.

AFAIK this is the stock exhaust, bar the elbow joint, no replacement of the piping from the cat back to the elbow. (It was on a friend's car, not my own.)

id say 5% at best from the ear dyno

which is more then i felt from the butt dyno

mind you i didnt replace the plumbing from cat back, only cut out the second ball and re-routed the plumbing to the single muffler using one small c bend

One ball the other side

Has anybody tried one balling the other muffler instead? So, keep the passenger side muffler and route the intermediate tube (that used go to the final muffler) to the back?

This might solve the removal of weight issue from passenger to driver sides.

thanks

If you look at the pics on the first page, that muffler doesn't have any exhaust exit out of it...

I guess you could do something to make it work, but it does not seem like it would be easy/worth it to me.

Every muffler has an in and an out. Cut the tube (Ø2 ½ diam.) exiting the passenger muffler and have additional tubing welded on to route to the back. Here's a chance to maybe choose different exhaust tips.

I get you on the in/out...you are right, i jut meant easily used. Should have been more specific!

Would you have that pipe run where the driver side muffler was around to where the stock tips come out? Am I following you correctly?

The semi-castrated portion is simply a glasspack bent in an interesting shape:

Yes.

Or you could cut the intermediate tube (Ø2 ½ diam.) right before the final muffler and weld a quick 90° dumping the exhaust toward the ground. Of course you'll have to add some sort of delete plate for the original bumper opening in the back.

Cheers!

What a coincidence. I was just thinking the very same while driving home today. My original comment was so myopic!! It's also good for the folks in New Zealand, Australia, and Hong Kong or anywhere else they drive on the 'wrong' side of the road...

And in the photo [that I deleted] you can also notice that the connecting pipe between the huevos is larger [2-1/2"] than the upstream [2-1/4"] tubing...

Can you fit a spare

Does the one ball surgery leave enough room to mount a doughnut spare under there. I want to get rid of the run flats but still be prepared to tour.

That is a very good question. One of the guys in the Sin City club just bought a Cooper donut spare for his MCSC, but it doesn't fit in the car unless the back seats are down. I suggested doing a 1-ball mod and mounting the spare where the passenger side muffler was. Will it fit?

Sorry for my tardy reply, I'd say in the vicinity of the 20-40% you've suggested, perhaps a bit lower, it's not that much louder, just a bit different. Although this is only in the context of the car being revved while stationary. I haven't actually been inside the car on a drive.

Next time you get a chance, take a peek under the rear of your vehicle. The battery would need to be relocated [it's right where the spare would go] and the exhaust tip(s) would probably need to be side mounted, like on the MC.

Exhaust Newbie Questions

Just to clarify, is the resonator located muffler-side of the cat or the header-side of the cat?

And also, it seems that some people consider taking the resonator out to be a "one-ball" exhaust, but this thread would suggest that taking away one of the mufflers is a "one-ball" exhaust...who's right?

So a 2.5 pipe from the cat through the elbow to mate up with the 2.25 pipe leading into the muffler. Do I have that straight? Sounds pretty simple if that's it.

Look at the 'before' and 'after' photos in my photo gallery for clarification.

So, by that response, I'm guessing the resonator is the piece you cut out on the passenger side that looks like a muffler? I guess I thought resonators were tube-like features closer to the front of the car -- is that only on the after market exhausts?
