I have seen various threads regarding aftermarket intake systems for the MCS. What I want to know is

1. How much louder will my car sound (annoyingly loud?) I heard the BMP is VERY loud.
2. Which is the loudest and which is the quietest.
3. Does one type or brand compliment aftermarket exhaust better than others?

I have the mini-madness air intake minifinn...
It's touted as the best gain in HP....
Install is a snap ...I did it... lol
There's no way for me to actually tell w/o a dyno actually HP gains, but it most definately " feels" faster.
1st gear is very smooth now.
As for the loudness...it's a nice "whine" sound when you crankup the rpm's....otherwise you won't know it's there..... when you drive normally.

Peace,
D

minifinn,

All good questions.

None of the intakes, even the BMP, are annoyingly loud. You almost don't hear a difference unless you are at wide open throttle.

I'd say the BMP is louder than the others, but not by a whole lot. The Madness and the Pipercross are just about a toss up. The drop-in elements are of course the quietest, and still make a hp gain - just not as much. It is a stealth look though.

We have seen the best gains in independent dyno testing with the Madness and the Magnaflow, with the Madness and Quicksilver not that far behind. The BMP may work well with the Supersprint - that's the one combo I haven't tested. Stay tuned to hear more about that - I'm still trying to work something out to get that eval. The Pipercross makes similar numbers to the BMP - it is more open, but is is smaller and lower flow, so it makes sense. The Borla made the least horsepower, and the BMP made the least power, but that combo wasn't tested, so I wouldn't know if that is the lowest in combination.

There will be more testing with the BMP - at their request - so we'll see if the numbers are any better. I have a feeling that the airbox partition mod will make a big difference for the BMP. The mod is loud though - a very nice sound, but it sounds like the supercharger is in the cabin with you!

This is the way I break it down, and you can do a search and probably see this elsewhere:

Madness and Magnaflow - the most horsepower/the loudest
Madness and Quicksilver - not far behind/more subtle sound
Madness and Borla - not much more of a gain over just the intake/another subtle sound
BMP and Magnaflow - about the same as the Madness and Quicksilver for power/loud
BMP and Quicksilver - nice power improvement/nice sound
BMP and Borla - not tested

I'll try to dig up the numbers to post. More dyno testing is on the way.

Hope this helps some. Let me know if you have any other questions.

Randy

Randy,

How loud is the BMP with the airbox mod at normal throttle???

Also, you were going to try to put together a Supertrapp system to test. How is that going? I think you would be pleasantly suprised at the sound, lack of noise intrusion into the cab, and performance.

Keep up the good work.

John

I know, I know - but it's not like there's nothing else going on around here!

I do still plan on doing an eval on the Supertrapp, but since I have a few exhausts that I've already looked at (and like three of them), I figured I would concetrate on suspension and braking until I have a few systems that I can offer there.

The BMP isn't that much louder than the Madness. It isn't really noticeable until you step on it.

Stay tuned!

Randy

Randy,

You're right, we are all keeping you busier than a one legged guy in a butt kickin contest, sorry.

I do appreciate all you are doing.

One thing when you have time, I would like to see the madness and the bmp intakes off the car and photographed at several angles. We have all seen the typical ad angles, but several angles might make understanding things you talk about easier to visualize.

Thanks,

John

p.s. no hurry.

Randy,
Thanks for the detailed response. You are very thorough indeed. We are grateful for you input.

Next question, Air box mod?

Is this similar to the one you did for the Madness system where holes are drilled in the cowling?

minifinn,

It's the same mod. It will work with any of the aftermarket intakes.

There's another mod for the intake in the works, but it may be a few weeks before it is attended to.

As long as you aren't doing anything Randy.....
I wonder about that airbox mod....can H2O
get sucked in as well once you open it up?
BTW I am lining the box with heat shield in the AM
although I know I won't see any difference...it'll
make me feel better....

I just installed the Madness filter last night on my S. I also performed the air box modification with a razor knife. I have noticed a definate sound difference during part to full throttle. It sounds like an engine with no air cleaner. Also, a slight hissing sound when slowly taking off in first gear. Not quite sure if I like the new sounds yet. More power? Could'nt really tell. Am I happy with the upgrade? Not really. Am I going to add an exhaust system? Yes. Maybe I'm just expecting too much from reading all the other posts. Just some thoughts and observations.

Rusty,

Welcome to MCO!

The mod isn't for everyone because of the increase in supercharger whine (it kinda sounds like a turbine is in the car with you). It hasn't been on the dyno yet, but the increase in power do to the increase in cold air supply (and the notorious butt dyno driving a Madness intake without the mod right after driving one with the mod) would definitely suggest the power is there. I'll be sure to post after some dyno testing is done.

I love the sound, but it's surely subjective.

Let me know if I can help you at all. I will check on the part number for the plastic piece tomorrow.

One thing to consider before changing it back though - without the exhaust, the car will be totally intake dominant soundwise. If you do any of the cat-back systems, the car sounds much more balanced, so I would wait until you do your exhaust system before making any decisions.

Hope that helps.

Randy

Thanks for your response Randy. Like I said, I'm going to upgrade the exhaust. My cousin works for Magnaflow and as soon as they finish a big order of cooper s systems (I wonder for who?) I'll be getting mine. Then we'll see about the sound and power or lack of.

Mike,

Sorry man!

There is no eveidence of water being able to make it all the way to the airbox. Even in the stock set-up, there is a small hole in the partition that feeds the airbox directly, so I don't think even MINI sees a problem with debris or water. I've washed the car several times, and hear from my friends that actually drive in inclement weather with their MINIs, that no water gets in. (I haven't done any hurricane testing for my FL friends though )

Let me know if you need any further info on that.

Randy
