The knock sensor in a Mini should allow the computer to prevent any knocking period. If you add noisier engine parts a knock sensor may be fooled and timing may be dialed back unnecessarily, but there still will not be any knocking.
If it is not a Mini you are asking about.... knocking at part throttle usually sounds like shaking marbles in a coffeecan and you'll hear it. Knocking at full throttle may be inaudible due to all the other noise at full throttle but don't worry you'll know about it soon enough because the car will be broken down on the side of the road

Then you are running extra advance and the knock sensor may have been "desensitized" a bit. Listen for rattling when on the gas (even under light load) and especially when tipping into the gas. It would be very important to note exactly when a rattle is heard so it would be possible to dial back timing only there.
