Alta CAI question?

All,

OK, Installed my Alta, but I am getting a wierd sound. No, I understand the supercharger sound, but this is a REALLY high pitched sound, almost like a high pitched whistle. I get it going into and coming out of the throttle, and while crusing, if I feather the throttle just right I can get it to keep going for a while. It really like nails on the chalkboard annoying, so much so that if this is normal I will remove the Alta CAI.

Is this normal, or does anyone have any ideas?

Thanks,

- John Connor

The alta intake is often very very very oiled. In fact it's sometimes hard to install since the filter keeps slipping off.

Make sure that the filter is well seated and sealed. You can wipe off all oil from the ring it mounts to- that usually helps.

Check that all hoses are connected/reconnected. Check the seal on the silicon hose to the throttlebody.

Have someone sit in the driver's seat to hit the throttle, open the bonnet and stand in front of the MINI to listen for a source of the sound. Can you still hear it?

Yeah, I'm afraid the noise is pretty common.

The good news is it doesn't take long to get used to the whistle.

My Alta is sitting on the shelf waiting for the install, so take this with a grain of salt. I have a similar sound that comes from the new intake on my Maxima... it's from the vacuum hoses. Man I love that sound

Thanks all, and for the link to the other thread. At least now I know it's normal and there is nothing wrong with my car! I'm already getting used to it, and I usually drive with the radio on so I won't hear it as much.

You are hearing the throttle body "whistle". It's normal and comes and goes according to throttle position, etc. You do not hear this until you do the Alta CAI, just as you do not hear the much more pronounced supercharger whine until after the mod. Be happy-don't worry.

I now drive with the radio OFF, just to hear the sucking sound, S/C whine and high pitched whistle... Scares the carp out of the Honda drivers, they all think I have a S/C and a Turbo.....
