Drivetrain The cheapest CAI intake ever!! **FREE**
So I just installed the HAI in replacement of the PCAI. I have yet to drop a K&N filter into the PCAI so the comparason isnt going to be perfect. I did notice a difference between the two. The HAI seems to pull a little stronger down low, but doesnt seem to let the engine breathe as much up high. Granted these are all just assumptions, but I now have the final piece needed for the dyno.
I will be dynoing in this order.
1. Stock
2. PCAI w/ stock filter
3. PCAI w/ K&N drop in filter
4. HAI filter.
I missed the dyno day due to work, but I am going to schedule another dyno w/in the next week or two.

One more variation that I'm trying out.
1540 K&N clamped onto the stock hose, - the top of the stock box, w/ rear wall removed. I used a flathead screw/type clamp and put the stock intake into the 1540, then clamped it down. It snugs right up.

made my own intake today
I got out the dremel today & fashioned my own CAI. I cut an approx. 3" x 6" rectangle from the back of the stock mcs air cleaner base & then a corresponding hole in the wall. I used adhesive-backed weatherstripping to join & insulate and join the openings. With the lid on you cannot see the modification.
It turned out quieter than I expected, but that may be due to the stock element I'm using. There is only slightly more sound under light load, but the whine is more pronounced when you get on it. It seems a little faster (of course) but I can't say for sure. I just replaced S-lites with some light 15s a few days ago & I'm still adjusting to the difference.
I had a Rogue previously & before that a BMP. Both of those made more noise (especially the BMP). Did they make more power? Maybe, but not enough to matter to me.
I like the fact that the mod is invisible & that the sound is less obvious. Oh, and the price is tough to beat!
I will replace the filter eventually just to see if anything changes.

Good stuff!
A creative new mod, the inventor hasn't made any wild unsubstantiated claims, and has no financial interest in the mod. And he's willing to dyno it to boot!
This is what it's all about. Look forward to the results.

you have to be kidding me...that is so stupid....why...why ....why...would you even think of doing that..flip over the intake box....if you can afford to by the mini in the first place then im sure you can afford 200 bucks for a good CAI or a hot air intake....thats sad

Bates,
I have a HAI that I'm using as a comparison, and I've pondered spending $200 on a CAI, but thought that I might find some of the same results by using my brain rather than blindly digging into my wallet.
As stated previously in the post, some of the Honda drivers in the Speedvision Cup have used a mod just like this one in their racecars, not because they couldn't afford a real CAI, but the found the difference between an open stock air box, and a CAI not worth spending money on.
The fact that you don't understand what would drive someone to do this leads me to believe you need to spend more of your time in the appearance forum...because stuff like this is obviously beyond you.
-Jake
On another note, my wife decided to take 2 summer classes...so my Dyno money went towards a higher cause. Should happen w/in a couple weeks.

i love how the person who makes fun of your ingenuity has a "minimadness" pic at the bottom of his profile.... i wonder if he sells a CAI... oh well, congrats on "using your head" and i would love to hear how it works out
Cheers!

Yes, some people do still think before they spend money. Not in Kirkland though (you spelt BUY wrong BY the way)
. I really wish someone else on this thread was from the Seattle area and could share in this humor. Its funny.Nice thinking Coop d'etat. Next thing you know d6-mcs will be paying someone else to do the same thing to his MINI.
I admire your ingenuity.
That works like flipping the circular filter cover on my high school bud's '68 GTO. More noise, a little more airflow. The noise was great, butt dyno numbers count, and the pertinent performance number is, indeed, $0. It's also completely reversible!
Flipping the airbox is cool. Neat idea.
Maybe it works, maybe not.
Completely reversible mod? Priceless as they say.
Be creative. Don't be like everyone else.
Flip over your steering wheel (or something) and drive.
Put your left directional wheels on your right and vice versa.
Hey if you only drive in reverse then you are pointing the wheels in the "right" direction for the tread! Ever thought of that??
Drive on two wheels- on purpose of course.
