Looking for info on a CAI

I am looking for info on a MCS intake system i am more curious about a full system with complete piping instead of just a conical filter replacement and some modification to the airbox. Something like this:

Are there other companies that make similar systems and what do you think about these systems. Is the K&N Typhoon (shown above) any good.

Irish,

There is a vast amount of data and opinion on nearly every aftermarket MINI intake available. Simply do a search in this forum. There is also a dedicated threat over on MINI2.com I believe. Although both are expensive, the full Alta kit, the K&N, and the JCW Upgrade seem to be favorites. That doesn't mean the others aren't effective as well. At the moment I can recall in no particular order:
K&N Typhoon
Alta
Pilo Racing
Promini
GT Tuning
Cobalt
JCW Upgrade
Diana (spelling?)
Andy's homebrew "HAI" (Hot Air Intake)

There are others too. You might also start by hitting each of NAM's sponsors to see what's out there.
I have the K&N and like it. I can't tell you if it truly adds HP as I've not personally dyno'd it. Its attractive and includes every nut and bolt to secure it properly.

Im using the Pilo. very quiet, fitment and finish is top notch.

very economically priced too, if that matters and comes with
its own filter cleaning kit. It's a nice package.

I chose the Pilo because all I wanted was to increase air flow
for the intake. If I want more noise, I guess I can drill out some
holes in the crowl to simulate the Alta.

From what I hear, the M7 system will be worth waiting for.

The ALTA seems to offer the most Horsepower gains from what I have read. The K&N looks pretty but the gains just are not there I will likely go with the ALTA soon. Might want to wait for M7 air gain system if you like long mysteries

Why is the alta so special? From what i have seen its just a filter replacement. I want something that is pretty like the typhoon but functional and replaces all the stock piping. I am curious if there are others like the typhoon. I did a search for intakes and didnt come up with anything.
BTW i would love to see pictures.

Thanx where can i find pictures of these? I have seen the JCW and the typhoon and the Dinan (not Diana a friend has one).

IrishCooper,
The K&N Typhoon came out early at a fairly high price and was advertised to give decent power gains. In reality, most intakes don't really do that much for power. The Typhoon is OK, performance equaled by the Hot air intake.

Note one comment mentions initially more power but later with more heat in the engine bay the power didn't last.

For the Hot Air intake-

The various choices do "look" different, they make different intake noises, and they vary in price.

Check out some vendor sites-

For M7 AGS-

For JCW intake (with pics see post #10)

Dinan vs Alta intake-

Wow thanx for all that it seems like Alta is the most popular. I am curious to see what this M7 is all about so i will wait to see once that comes out but its between that and the Typhoon or Alta (leaning towards Alta)

I have the BenFer CAI. I got it to improve airflow, and I liked that the filter was protected by the box, and it fits under their strut brace!

If you want to save some money, it looks like the pilo intake can simulate the alta, by just removing the back plate that the alta removes. This is what i am going to do with my pilo intake that i bought off of a member on this board. I bet i can get the same performance by doing what the alta does with the pilo intake.
