Drivetrain Supersprint Exhaust....anyone have one and if so what do you
It's toward the end of 2002 and so I am starting to save up money for my new exhaust. For the past couple months I have had my heart pretty much set on a Supersprint, but I was wondering if anyone already had switched to one and if so what do you think??
Any input would be appreciated!

I like the Magnaflow better. It is a cat-back system as opposed to the Supersprint, which isn't and may require you to cut the stock system, I haven't done one yet, so I'm not sure how they attach it. Here's a pic of the Magnaflow:

Interesting how the Cooper Magnaflow Exhaust has those nubs on the rear hanger pins, while the Cooper S Magnaflow just has straight pins.
Also, that tip on the Magnaflow Cooper exhaust looks soooo much better than the Magnaflow Cooper S tips.

I just can't justify ~$1500 for an exhaust. That's just far too much. Personally, I will be looking at the Quicksilver exhaust from mini-madness. When we did our dyno testing we found that it made good power in it's prototype form (no madrel bends). The production model should put down about 10-12hp at the wheels and it weighs so very little that you can walk around with the whole cat-back assembly comfortablly in one hand. Can't say that for the stock system or the Magnaflow system we tested. I'm a big fan of light weight and affordibility.

I agree, the tips do look better.
I think the reason there are nubs on the Cooper system is that the rubber mounts are slightly different. The S has slightly more substantial rubber mounts.

I checked on the exhaust system form Magnaflow. I could get you that system for $550 plus shipping. The retail is $665.70.
I have the Magnaflow on my S and have been happy with the results. Very smooth, no vibrations, and a definite rumble sound on part throttle lift. The system is also lighter than stock, and, so far, makes more power than any of the other systems.
Let me know if you're interested. I could also get you the Borla, but it's more expensive. It sounds good, but it doesn't make as much power. The pic shows the Borla Cooper system on the top, and the S system on the bottom.

Both the Magnaflow and the Borla are stainless steel, and they both come with warranties (7 years for the Magnaflow and 1,000,000 miles for the Borla).
Email me when you know what you want, I can probably get it for you.

Hit send a little too quickly. I was going to say the Remus is very similiar to the supersprint in sound. I've never driven the Supersprint but I've heard it a couple times. I can't specifically recommend the Remus over the Supersprint but I can tell you I've been totally happy with my Remus from day one. I've got about 5k miles on it.
Gabe,
I don't think the Remus is all stainless. That is a great price though. Is it a cat-back system?

No it's not 100% stainless but from my experience niether is the supersprint. From looking at both it would see they're very similiar in construction. Both systems bolt on after the Cat. - Very simple install.

I believe the Supersprint is all stainless, but it costs a small fortune by the time you buy each separate piece. The exhaust looks great on your car Gabe! It sounds nice too.
I like the Magnaflow and the Borla the best, but that's been my experience base. They are both great as far as installation and build quality. I like the all stainless systems, and they aren't that much more expensive - about $100 - $150.
If you want looks and power with decent sound, I think you would be happy with any of the systems out there. This is how I see it:
Borla: great system, all stainless, fit may not be as good as Magnaflow
Magnaflow: great system, all stainless, straight through flow design, highest HP
RSpeed: all stainless, unknown quantity to me at this point, looks good
Remus: Looks and sounds good, not %100 stainless, cost effective
Supersprint: many pieces to buy, expensive, all stainless, sounds and looks good
There are a couple other systems out there, but I would narrow my search to these.

We pretty much decided on a Supersprint exhaust back in April 2001, when we ordered our MCS. We have had great experiences with Supersprint-- on a previous Neuspeed-equipped Jetta and on our current BMW Z3 (4 years with the Supersprint and we still love it). Additionally, we have had a number of other exhausts on other cars (Ansa, B&B, Comptech, Stromung, and custom exhausts) and know what we DON’T like… namely systems that are embarrassingly loud or whisper quiet and/or have poor build quality (even under warranty, it’s no fun shipping exhaust systems back to the manufacturer). This is why we selected Supersprint on prior cars and again on our MCS.
1) Sound- it's sweet <not on ‘Sport’ MCS mufflers… read through to the bottom…>
2) Loudness- not too loud, not too quiet
3) Piping- all mandrel-bent, optimized diameter
4) Quality- plate steel flanges, not stamped; seams welded & rolled, not crimped
5) Tuners- more contracts w/ top BMW tuners than all other exhaust manufacturers combined
6) Fit- Metric OE dimensions and true bolt-on <not in the case of first MCS systems>
7) Experience- since 1955... older than me
Testing- there's a reason top road & rally teams use SS dyno facilities
9) Power- independent tests verify HP increases
10) Coolness factor- no explanation needed; SS exhausts are works of art
When we took delivery of our MCS in May 2002, we knew we wanted the Supersprint, but wanted to evaluate other exhaust systems as well (e.g. AC Schnitzer, Dinan, Hamann, Mini Mania, Rogue Engineering, and UUC Motorwerks). Of course the main problems is that none of these tuners had Cooper S systems available until just recently. We reviewed manufacturers’ information, dealers’ information, write-ups on the regular Cooper systems, information on BMW exhausts made by these folks, and of course lots of talks, emails, and Internet message board lurking. Based on this, we felt comfortable sticking with what had always worked in the past—Supersprint.
Since our car is going to be a magazine feature car, it has quite a few upgrades (actually, the upgrades costs exceed the cost of the car). Although the majority of these expenses have been taken straight out of the Bank of Tom & Shannon, there are a few thousand dollars of upgrades that were contributed by a few sponsors. We were encouraged to take a free Magnaflow exhaust system by someone with contacts there, but obviously declined it (preferring to pay for our Supersprint and go with the “sure thing”). Evidently Magnaflow is claiming 18 horsepower (seems suspect- Borla claims 6 horsepower <and Magnaflow actually makes mufflers for Borla under contract> and other manufacturers’ claims range from 5 to 8 horsepower, except Supertrapp claims 13). Supersprint’s claim of 18 horsepower for a FULL system (including headers) seems more believable. Only a dyno comparison will tell for sure.
In early October we laid out the $2,000+ for the Supersprint… the time we actually received it was a little over two months later. We purchased it through Jason Reich, President of Monster Mini (909-351-9566; hands down the BEST aftermarket MINI vendor we’ve worked with). Ara Manoukian, owner of EURasian Autosport installed the exhaust on Dec. 16-17 (626-793-5512; hands down the BEST aftermarket MINI mechanic we’ve worked with)… and did the follow up modification on Dec. 19th. The install was complicated!
We are not mechanically inclined people and we do no work of our own… so I’m just repeating what Ara said. The headers require dropping the sub frame of the car and it is a major job (read: hours of labor expen$e). The factory head shield above the OE exhaust manifold does NOT fit over the headers and Ara modified it to fit (did I mention that Ara also builds Subaru WRX rally cars and race-preps BMWs?). Also the pipes that Supersprint sent and the OE pipes on the car… well, they require cutting and welding to get everything together under the car—not a problem for Ara, but not something to trust to the local Midas Muffler shop. Lastly, the turned-up twin DTM tips look terrific… but they weren’t just touching the bumper opening, they were pressed hard against it (hot metal tips and cool plastic bumpers don’t go well together). Again, Ara was able to modify things to get the DTM tips to clear the opening. And about the sound…
When our MCS first came back after the Supersprint install the exhaust sounded great… if you were on a racetrack. Since this is a street car and we don’t want to announce our arrival blocks ahead of time, something had to be wrong. Supersprint neglected to tell their dealer (Monster Mini) that this system is a ‘Sport’ system (something that is NOT listed anywhere on Supersprint’s web site); it’s loud. Back to Ara and a 15” section of the center pipe was removed and replaced with a 15” resonator and now it sounds like….
<actually I’m picking up the car later today… to be continued>
For any sane person, wait until Feb. for Supersprint’s ‘Street’ system!

I personally agree with all your conclusions - I got a hell of a price on my Remus, otherwise I might have opted for something all stainless. For what it's worth the main MINI/BMW mechanic at my dealer only recommends Remus and Supersprint. His opinion of most others out there is pretty low considering the money you pay for them.
The Supersprint system I've seen is exactly like the Remus; a catback. I was told by my mechanic that the system I saw on this particular car was not 100% stainless but very close to being that. There are other optional pieces you can buy with the Supersprint to make it an entire system. At least that's what i was lead to believe. - is that what you've heard?

Gabe,
Yes, the info I posted was in regards to the Cooper, the S is a whole different story that I also have plenty of experience with (I just put in the fifth exhaust system on an S today).
Hey SoCalTom, as far as the Supersprint goes - SAY WHAA? You had to cut and weld a bolt in system? The tips were slammed up against the bumper? You payed $2000? You are still happy with Supersprint?
I have installed (talking S now since that's what the post was regarding) the Borla, the Quicksilver, and the Magnaflow. I have been impressed with aspects of all three. All three are 100% stainless steel, all three were cat-back systems, and all three went on wihtout any cutting or welding (except Dave's
). The most expensive of the bunch is the Quicksilver at $800, with the Borla at $660 and the Magnaflow at $620. They each have their own unique sound, but they all sound great! The Quicksilver is less than half the weight of the stock system, and the other two are at least 10 lbs lighter than stock.
I just can't see getting a Supersprint.

>>Been thinking about converting from stock to the Magnaflow exhaust for my S. Does such performance modification change the warranty in any way? Jim in Tulsa
Jim,
In Denver, absolutely not. I talked with the MINI tech here at our dealer and the response was, as long as the head or internals have not been modified, the warranty is intact. You also could void the warranty using ECU mods. Other than that, intakes, exhaust, plug wires, plugs, etc. are all good.
The way MINI views it is that the modification has to be directly responsible for the failure in order for it not to be covered.
Let me know when you want to order Jim, I have the lowest prices around on Magnaflow.

Well, L.Mini, I'll put in my vote for the Mini Mania CAT back exhaust. It is all polished stainless steel, looks so nice its almost a shame to hide it under the car. The sound is great and it comes with a tip insert for quieter running when you want it. In tests done by Grassroots Motorsports magazine comparing Supersprint, Rouge, Mini Mania and Helix exhaust products for the Cooper they liked the Mini Mania unit the best overall and used it on their car. The Helix unit produced the most HP, but this was at high rpms, whereas the MM unit produced the most torque gain between 2500-3500 rpm where you do most of your driving. Torque output is the acceleration you real feel. The MM cost $695, but its worth it, I found it to be a quality product (built by Comptech).
Duke,
That is a pretty piece of engineering. I haven't had any experience with it yet, so I appreciate your comments. I think most of the manufacturers have done a pretty good job with this system. Most out there are stainless steel, sound good, look like works of art, and are all under $1000. That's pretty good when you look at some of the other high end systems that are 100% stainless made for BMW, Mercedes, Porsche, and even Volkswagen.
Being that the Magnaflow is new and has missed out on a lot of the testing from some of the Mags, I feel compelled to say that I think they did their homework and the extra credit. The torque is there at the low end range of the RPM band, I believe due to the step in diameter from the resonator off of the cat (which is a Magnaflow exclusive) and the Horsepower numbers are impressive as well. The backpressure was carefully tuned to provide optimum flow without losing any torque.
I know, I know, it sounds like I'm plugging the Magnaflow. I really don't think you could go wrong as long as you don't pay too much. I've covered what I think are the highlights of each system. If anyone has any questions about any of the exhausts, I'd be glad to discuss them. The ones I'm not familiar with, I'll try to gather some more info on.
