Alta Oil Catch Can location - new

I want to share where I installed me Oil Catch Can on an 05MCS. I haven't seen this used by anyone else so I did it and acted the test monkey. I've run it here for 2 weeks and have not had any problems so far. Vibration was an initial concern and something I will continue to keep an eye out for. Should it be a problem it is easily remedied. IMO it is better than ALTA recommended location and easier than the site I've seen other folks put it (near the passenger strut). Peace and goodwill!

it's gonna be pretty hot back there. I'd check the level hose often just to be sure it doesn't melt.

I'd be concerned about heat from the header also. Do you have a temp probe you can put there and check how hot the catch can gets? This would just be a safety check.

My M7 can is about 2 inches more toward the driver’s side. It was mounted there because I have the factory alarm. It has been there for about 6 months. I have had no trouble at all; the site tube is just fine. Just remember to keep the heat shield down and in place.

that melted sight tube is surprising considering the similar location of the power steering and coolant resevoirs and hoses as well as wiring harness

I think the situation with my car was due to two things. For one I have a aftermarket header which may run a bit hotter and secondly the heat shield was bent up to some degree. I admit I was surpised as well as we have had many other cars run it there with no problem. Another Mini mystery

I had the same concern of the melted site tube
So far so good. In addition there were other plastic & silicon bits
about the engine I figured to be subject to similar heat.
Rye - no on the probe. Unless opening the hood and searching for
melted bits with me eye counts as probing:smile:
It sounds like I am not the only person having done this??

That location does not get in the way of oil filter changes at all. That spot is up higher and more inboard on the rear bulkhead than where you need to be to change the filter.
