Everyone,
I received this from Diamond Racing today and thought it would be of interest to everyone. Enjoy...

12/05/2002-Diamond Racing is proud to introduce to the United States another
performance upgrade for the new Mini Cooper "S". Diamond Racing is a US
Distributer for Superchips UK. Superchips UK has developed a conversion for
the new Mini Cooper S. This conversion increases the power from 165bhp up
to 171bhp at 6,613rpm and torque from 203Nm up to 208Nm at 1,885rpm. The
modification is not so much a performance upgrade as a throttle response
improvement, making the vehicle crisper and livelier in the low to
mid-range.
This is modified using the latest Serial Programming System(SPS). SPS
programming is done through the ODB II connection. This allows only specific
changes to be made. Which allows the Stock Chip and ECU to ramain. This
procedure does not require any hardware modification.
Diamond Racing partnered with Superchips because they are the world leaders
at reprogramming your car's on-board computer to enhance performance.
Daimond Racing can increase performance for any particular car. Using
Superchips Technology, Diamond Racing can reprogram the information held on
the computer's chip (hence the name Superchips) to optimise and improve
power output without compromising fuel economy. The technical stuff Car
manufacturer's call the on-board computer the Electronic Control Unit (the
ECU). This monitors and controls ignition timing and the fueling across a
range of driving conditions. The Superchip is programmed to adjust the
timing and fuelling maps to optimise performance.
For ordering information go to Diamond Racing's website at

Found it.
Here's the link to the Cooper S Chip on Diamond's Site
Here's the dyno plot from their site too.
ECU Tuning
MINI Cooper S 1.6 Super Charged
PRICE $300
Much better than $749. Not as much claimed power though.

DaveInDenver,
Just out of curiosity, what have the dealers said when you have brought your Mini in for service, or do you do your own? After hearing from 2002 owners, I am a bit retiscent (for now) of doing anything beyond installing my own lights.
I know there has been a lot of discussion regarding Magnuson and Moss, etc. on MCO. However, you are among the resident mod experts, and I would like your opinion. It just seem crazy to me to risk ending up in a warranty dispute, especially with all of the problems (look at NYIllustrator's plight). I can understand the temptation of picking up close to 20 hp by simply swapping exhausts, but playing with the car's computer to gain 6 hp? Also, how would you explain BMW's decision to go with an less performance-yielding exhaust sytem (Better MPGs?)?
Your humble student,
Otto

Well this ventues a little off topic, but here are my thoughts
1) There are now 16,200 miles on my MCS. The initial shakedown is over (cold start / coolant). Any problems that happen from this point out are not likely to happen until after the warrenty period is up (chipped or not). So, for $300 I'd be up for 20 hp. Now, if MINIUSA does the smart thing and offers up the JCW ECU upgrade as a seperate option with the JCW warranty, then I might be convinced to pay more. That said, companies like Superchips and GIAC have a solid reputation for reliable tuning. I'm anxiously waiting to see how much power GIAC is able to get out of the Cooper S and if they will keep the price in a sane $300-$400 price range. The fact that Superchips is $300 gives me hope.
2) The stock exhaust has to satisfy a lot of requirements around the world. For example, one exhaust has to meet U.S. emissions and noise requirements, while at the same time meeting European emissions and noise requirements. Euro noise standards may explain why the Cooper S exhaust goes from the Cat into one muffler, then out and around the battery, and then passes through the 2nd muffler, and then exits the car (i.e. all flow goes through both mufflers, vs. the aftermarket where the flow has generally been split after the Cat so that 1/2 the flow goes into each muffler).

Big wooo! An increase of 6hp. That's nothing. You could get that with a better intake. Many chips for VW's give at least a 10% increase and that's what I expect good engineers will be able to do for the MCS given time. I think Superchips was just trying to get one to market quick.
Do yourself a favor and wait until some other chips come out for the MCS.
