Axle & Tranny Spline Compatibility

Does anyone know if R53 axles are interchangeable among various model years? My research via RealOEM and ECS Tuning shows all axles are the same (both left and right).

However, I have replaced the original manual tranny of my 2003 R53 with a 2005 manual R53 tranny, and axle splines do not engage with tranny splines (axles do not go in.) Visual inspection indicates that the teeth on the 2003 axles have "square" spline shoulders, whereas the tranny splines seem to have "tapered" shoulders.

Any info or insight would be much appreciated.

This probably won't give you what your looking for, and I'm guessing they were both 6 speeds since you didn't mention it, and 5 speed to 6 speed would be completely different transmissions, but... I'm guessing what your running into is Facelift -vs- pre-Facelift transmissions, so you will probably need a set of Facelift axles as well.
But that's just a guess.
I don't think open -vs- LSD were different with the same ratio transmissions.

All R53 manuals are 6-speed Getrag except for gear ratios for post-facelift years.

As my post states, Realoem and ECS Tuning show the same axle part numbers for all R53 6-spd manual trannies.

I will check with local dealer using VINs for both cars to see if indeed there are any differences.

Thanks fir for your input and suggestions.

I will I’ll update the post if I find out more.

Both are OE, with less than 50K miles each set.

Yah, my bad, I was thinking there was a change in actual transmissions somewhere in there, but I guess I got my R50 & 53 crossover parts confused again.

Your absolutely right, it is very confusing if everything is OEM.
Good Luck
