You want hydolock, drive through a large puddle on the drivers side at high speed. If you are that dumb you deserve the big lock.
hmm...
(thinking about how you worded what you just said.....)
interesting!

Mike Barrett, Field Marketing Manager for BMW NA - the MINI division
his address is in Greer, SC - you might recognize that location as being the BMW plant that produces Z4's and X3/5's
Mike.Barrett@MINIUSA.com if you have any questions on people getting 'the big lock'

There WAS a grin
at the end.
Given the Mini Marketing effort (I wish I had a budget like that) I hope he knows something about cars. I am sure that he sees every possible way to destroy a vehicle.
But really, take out the box and drive normally in an extended heavy downpour, stop and open the hood....no water. You need a lot of water for hydolock!

in those cars, it could have rained 4 or 5 hours prior on a hot sunny day and you could still suck water in the intake!!! guess i'm too cautious still with the whole concept - not necessarily a bad thing, i don't believe!
With the HAI in place, I've driven in rain so hard that my windshield wipers could barely keep up. I've also driven through water over 1 ft deep (obviously, I didn't plan to but remnants of the recent hurricanes dumped a ton of rain on PA). In both cases, my engine continued to run and did not injest enough water to hydrolock (or do any other apparent damage). After one particularly heavy downpour, I popped my hood and used a paper towel to blot up any water that was on the K&N filter. There was none. In fact, the only wetness on the towel came from water dripping off the lip of the opened hood.
No doubt, if one were to submerge the car up to and over the throttle body, there wouldn't be any air to inhale, only water. Claiming that your intake is safer from a hydrolock standpoint than another intake doesn't "hold water" (get it?
). I'd be curious to see if there is any advantage, in either pressure drop or temperature, of using your irreversible intake mod compared to the easily reversible HAI.
