Borla Catback too loud. Help!

Hey guys,

I have had my MINI Cooper (non-S) for over 4 months. MINI of Sterling, VA installed a performance upgrade kit that included the Borla Catback Exhaust (http://new.minimania.com/web/SUBTYPE..._Inventory.cfm) (fourth one down the list), and its too damn loud. I don't mind it so much on short drives, but my commute to work is around 1hr every day (2hrs total).

Any ideas on what I could do for a quieter ride? It has a nice, throaty noise to it but it just reverberates too much for my taste.

Thanks!

Jorge

I love my Borla from 5000 rpm and up. You might be able to find someone on here that has a quieter system like Remus or AC Schnitzer (look the same) that are willing to trade. Good luck!

The way I see it you have 2 options.

1) Sell it and get a quieter exhaust.

or

2) Install a Magnaflow for a few weeks and get used to the rumble of that. Then reinstall your Borla and enjoy the nice soothing tones.

You can try to extend the exhaust tip further out from the valence. The relocation will lessen the baffling effect and will reduce in-cabin amplitude.

Some have installed dynamat (spelling?) sound absorption material in the interior. I'd search for more info about how much and where to install it.

I would check it carefully for leaks. It really shouldn't be loud.

I have the Race version. Tilting up the rear of the sunroof makes a huge difference in the resonance.

Take out your cat too!

I have a Supersprint header, no cat, and Magnaflow....that my friend is LOUD!

I may be taking a job that requires a 1-1/2 hr commute each way. I'll probably re-install the factory setup...........with a side exit cutout!

I too have a Borla on my non S MC. It is a little loud but it doesn't bother me.

I remember seeing on one of the MINI parts sites a baffle specifically for the Borla that will decrease the sound level. It will, of course, also decrease the flow thus decreasing power, but you can't have your cake and eat it too.

I can't remember which site it was, but it was one of the advertisers here on NAM. You'll have to go looking for it. It might have been Mini Mania.

Good luck,

For $10, you can buy a mesh cone baffel from Jegs or Summit (looks like a wire mesh cone) and weld it into the exit at your local exhaust shop. Dynamat sound deadening is probably the better idea.

I'm telling you, crack the sunroof or a window slightly. It makes a huge difference.

Well, FWIW, I cannot tolerate the volume of my exhaust anymore. I currently have the SS header, cat delete, and M'flow. I am keeping the M'flow mid section w/ resonator (2-1/2") and one-balling the factory to it. This will at least open it up to 2-1/2" all the way back. I'm removing the M'flow rear loop. In the midpipe, behind the M'flow resonator, I'll install an exhaust dump (cut-out) for when I want to open it up.

My 2 hour drive to and from the dragstrip last night was just too much noise. Especially without the interior! I had to wear earplugs the entire way.
BTW, it was just 46 degrees last night at the dragway.

So how did the car run Bisch? 46 must have been good conditions.

My lunch list:

Mustang GT
E36 M3
Acura RSX-S
Turbo Jetta
S2000
GTI VR6
A kid in a Mustang Cobra with plates "WHY-TRY" ....that's why!

I got a beat-down by a hyped up 'vette that beat me by about 6 minutes!

A turbo Civic ran a 12.3 @ 123mph!

I thought the Borla sounded great on "S"s that I heard. Magnaflows are too loud for my liking.

I don't know what you guys are talking about, my Magnaflow isn't all that loud , in fact I am going to remove the resonator from the mid pipe.

They always develop an internal rattle anyway.
