S Newbie. Essential mods?

I'm going from a '10 R56 to a '12 R55 S. I've been looking around and it seems the oil catch can and turbo heat shield would be rather essential mods for the S. Am I right/wrong? Is there anything else I should be considering? (Besides strut tower brace and intake) And is one brand better than another for any particular item?(The catch can in particular.) Thanks in advance guys and gals!

'12 will have an n18 motor, as long as pcv system is kept up the carbon build up issue hasn't been as bad as the older n14. Turbo heat shield ? I'm guessing you mean on the oil lines is already there for the newer engine

Turbo heat shield

From what I've seen, it's a plate that bolts on over the turbo and acts to shield the intake cowl from eventually melting? https://youtu.be/ykTrMvud6r4

Hopefully that video explains it. Anything else I should be aware of in general?

O - yea I got ya, there is a heat shield from the factory, not anywhere near as nice as the aftermarket offerings.

Skip the intake the just go with a high flow dry panel filter. Very little to be gained from going aftermarket.

I would view all mods as optional.

before anything i would get the car and make sure everything is in good working order and figure out which direction you want to go with it.
for some theres plenty of power, for others it handles great right out of the box, others may want to show it off

It's at the mini dealership and is coming with a 6? month warranty. I'm more concerned with things that could cause early degradation/issues atm. (Hence my interest in the catch can and heat shield)

I would skip the heat shield , it directs heat to other places. I have seen a few guys melt their valve cover and have an oil fire. Just let the oem shields work their magic as designed.

Essential Mods

After making certain everything is serviced and maintained to schedule, there are various stages of performance upgrade. Please feel free to ask any questions you have about these!

As stated above, ensure everything is in working order before you add mods --- don't want to screw up any warranty. Then decide what you want to do with it, and mod accordingly. I've built a HP monster, and the reliability has gone down as the HP goes up. Be very careful if you take the HP route.

PS --- strut tower braces are mostly cosmetic, unless you build exclusively for track. And, they often interfere physically with aftermarket intake filters. Choose carefully if you go for either.

New MINI Owner

Good advice!

When you are ready, we can help with the catch can, too.

Essential mods IMO

INTERCOOLER, prolongs the life of your turbo
Drop in dry air filter, flows away better than the stock oem filter
JB+, plug & play easy mod
Alta upgraded bov spring
Upgraded engine torque arm bushing

If those mods don't make you happy at least you have a good starting point to upgrade even further.
