Installed Milltek Catback - Service Engine Soon Light?

I installed the '04 Milltek cat back exhaust over the weekend. Nice product, easy install, not much louder than stock - as advertised. After about 50 miles the "Service Engine Soon" warning light came on. According to the manual "this indicates a malfunction in the emmissions-related electronic systems". Since the new exhaust is after the 02 sensor as well as the cat, what gives? Any insight would be appreciated.

Cheers,

Until you draw the exact code you are flying blind. It may very well be totally unrelated to the exhaust installation.

You need to find someone with a scanner or OBDII diagnostic software and determine the exact DTC.

Good luck,

service engine soon

I have never dropped my exhaust, but I recall a warning, that you should unpug the second O2 sensor before lowering the pipes or you will break the wires.

JDewey - the O2 sensor is forward of the cat back flange. It isn't disturbed when you drop the exhaust after the cat.....

Not sure if it'll help, but try re-torquing the clamp, then turn engine on/off 5 times to clear the CEL. if it turns on again, then its something else.

KenChan,

Thanks I'll give the on/off routine a try. I did re-torque the two flanges and single slip joint already. Too much silly electronic stuff!

Morefun - I also installed the Milltek on my '02 ... the first few hundred miles the exhaust sounded about the same as stock but then it gets a little more aggressive (but only when you're putting your foot into it).
Have fun!

I'm not sure if your five hits of the switch clears the code or simply turns off the light. If it clears the code, you should not do it until you know what the code is.

I expect that it only turns off the light, but the code remains.

Good luck,

Good point. But as the dealer isn't down the street, I'll have to let it go for now. Thanks.

You don't need the dealer to draw the code. You probably have a neighbor or local independent shop that has a scanner or something. OBDII is a STANDARD that has been mandated in ALL cars sold in the US since 1996.

Because it is a standard, there are lots of people who can draw the code in any number of ways varying from cheap, handheld scanners to expensive equipment that is found at ALL brand dealerships.

Ask around.

Good luck,
