I bought the little piggy back from Burgertuning the first week it became available and yes the car felt much stronger than stock. Today I have taken off the little black box and bought a real turbo for my Cooper S. The new turbo is a Garrett gt2871r with specs of about 450 whp. Custom turbo manifold complete and bolted in along with larger intercooler. Full 3" exhaust with Borla Pro Xs 40474 muffler. Will post pictures in next post. *
My mechanic who is making all the mods is working with a German tuner who has tuned for him before. I met the tuner and I'm confident that I'll be running a comfortable 350 when it's done. This dude knows his stuff. Limitations will be the plastic intake plenum and the stock bottom end.
I'll post a picture of the snail and garrett as soon as I can. Look in my gallery I have a few pics there.
Don't know what the specs on the stock turbo is but it's a funny little thing. The turbine housing and the exhaust manifold is one piece. If you look in my gallery you'll see how really small the stock turbo is. I'll post a schematic of the stock turbo.
Cool. This will be interesting!
If anything breakes, please tell us, so we know the real-life limitations.
The engine was engineered to be able to handle up to around 275hp when it was designed (stated by an BMW-executive in an interview).
Will you upgrade the clutch?
Will you upgrade the engine cooling?
The cool thing is that my Cooper is my second vehicle so if it breaks I'll just replace as I go. I'll be sure to let you know the real limitations of the engine, transmission and the ccooling system.
To Randomquickness' question, The shop is AutofaB in Sunrise Florida. In a few weeks we'll have the numbers to decide if the return was in fact worth investment. To fenderpicks query, I could have done a Supra with lots of hp but there are lots of those around. Lots of Hondas, Evos, Lexus and the list goes on. Initially I just wanted a small car just for work and for round town driving. This project was never in my plans. But, this little car begs to go fast and it's different so I've chosen to take on my personal Mini challenge. This B48 motor pulls the larger and heavier BMW 528i so I expect to have a big smile on my face when I take the whip to the unsuspecting. With just the piggyback the car ran past a GTI at 141 mph with more mph remaining and the car felt solid. I do have the DDC suspension so that does contribute significantly to the stable ride. The plan is to get the car to 350hp on stock internals and that's great considering power to weight ratio. Videos will be coming soon.
