Drivetrain considering a Sprintex...opinions?
considering a Sprintex...opinions?
Hello.
Come spring, I want to do SC/H2O pump and coolant hoses (have). I have 130K miles currently and 15% pulley/inatke/exhaust, and it pulls hard. Purchased with 100K and have put 15K a year.
Given the cost of a SC rebuild with water pump, I wanted to weight options on say, a Sprintex.
My car is a daily driver, (had a turbo'd CRX before this), not driver hard, but love the sound and acceleration. I will probably keep forever, and has been very reliable for me, (although hard to get an accurate reading for oil).
I want a little bit more power, without getting into the aspects of tuning, (just yet), but would keep it conservative for reliability vice a hand grenade for power.
Thoughts??

I would recommend the TVS900 option RMW has been working on, Sprintex has had some issues with SC failure in the past, but those without issue have great running cars.
Either direction you go tuning is necessary, the injectors are at about 75-80% duty cycle with just pulley upgrades alone, so injectors are required to match the added CFM the Sprintex or TVS will be creating, or you'll be running lean.
If you're just looking for that extra little bit I would say 550cc injectors and a tune will be the most feasible option with the mods you currently have.

tuning isn't really an issue with sprintex I have been running sprintex for over a year with not tune yet. that's not saying im not going to get a tune for it just haven't gotten there yet. you don't have to get a tune right away to run it. I am waiting to get a few more things done before I tune mine.
I would read through the entirety of the sprinted owners thread in the modifications section. theres a few people who are still active that im sure will chime in, who have lost motors to the sprintex. if they have redesigned it, great, but they had oil seal failure, and intake temps were astronomical
The Sprintex thread has actually been pulled, the OP of the thread has been banned and the thread was pulled.
As far as the problems with the units, they did have an issue with an oil seal, this issue has supposedly been taken care of, I wish I could say for sure, but my car has been down from other issues since I received my replacement unit and have not been able to verify this myself. It actually didn't effect me since I changed my oil in the unit every time I changed my motor oil instead of the recommended 30k miles.
As far as intake temps, they only became a real problem if you started swapping pulleys, and even then it could be compensated for.
As far as other options, the TVS would be the only other real one, short of doing a full on custom turbo install, since I'm going to be using my Sprintex again I really haven't kept up on its progress, but don't see much about it on other boards, while it appears to be a good option, if your considering it, DO YOUR HOMEWORK, and make sure your getting an actual, complete "Kit", and not something that requires custom modifications or other things to add to the expense, this has been a problem in the past, just be aware of what your getting into.
If your truly interested PM me, there are still a thread or two in other forms that I can send you a link to, so you can do a little reading up.

Go with the stock Eaton. You've had good results from it both in reliability and performance. You know what you're getting and it truly is a bolt on affair.
The Sprintex adds too many wild cards (especially for a daily driver).

I am impressed that they removed that whole thread. unless sprintex could cover my motor if I went caput, ill wait a little bit for my self since they are a newer company, I love the idea of the electric waterpump and the twin screw. so much more efficient
I haven't found anything on anyones motor blowing up because of the sprintex. I have found where motors have blown and people happen to have a sprintex but people that are running eatons blow motors too. Eatons have massive oil problems too if you don't believe me check your fluid level in your eatons back port its probably gonna be empty or very low. the electric water pump is awesome it keeps fluid circulating for a while after you turn the car off and it removes it from the drive system entirely. And the heat issues with the sprintex aren't an issue mine seems to run cooler than my other mini that has the stock eaton.. However I am running Methanol but I run methanol on both cars and sprintex still seems cooler than eaton. I do over maintain both of my cars tho maybe that's y I haven't had any of the problems iv read others of having or maybe they just got bad kits. I did have issues with both of my stock eatons with the back oil reservoir being empty at 58 thousand miles on my 04 and at 45 and some change on my 06.
Oh and changing the oil in the sprintnex is a breeze. I change it every time I change my engine oil.

Wanted to say thanks for all the PM and replies so far.
I had the same debate when I installed a turbo on my CRX...is it something that I wanted to do, (I knew I wanted more power, and maintain reliability).
I kept it reliable, ran it rich at a conservative 6psi, and gave me more than enough power.
This one is a crossroads with great points; ability to change SC oil, electric h2o pump, not adding an aftermarket pull, no worries about PTO gears...
