Anyone run an aftermarket oil cooler on thier R53?

The factory oil cooler on my F53 (down by the oil filter housing) is starting to leak. I have the seals to fix it, and I'm planning on doing it today.

As I was searching ebay this morning, I found several of these aftermarket R53 oil cooler kits. Has anyone tried one of these? If so, where did you mount the cooler?

Any pictures?

I figure that if it's not the seals leaking, it's the actual oem cooler that's leaking....maybe I would be better off installing one of these aftermarket ones?

Thanks

Comes down to how you use the car...
Stock cooler also as a coolant loop, so functions to help warm the oil on shorter drives.....
Some aftermarket coolers can make the oil too cool during cold months... Resulting in moisture buildup...
So my suggestion...might be a OK thing on a track car, but a street car may ght need to have a oil temp guage, and might need the cooler covered part of the year for commuting...
If you oil cooler leaking or is it the gasket at the base of the oil filter? A leaking oil cooler usually results in an oil/coolant mix....
So issue might be a couple $ gasket......
The cooler is closer to the passanger side wheel well....but if the leak is on the back of the motor, its the gasket...

That's pretty hobo a find. These coolers are mounted behind the lower grille.
If your stock heat exchanger is just leaking oil externally & is visible in those torx bolts, the 2 seals will fix it. If behind, as Zippy said, it's the triangular 1.
If internally, you'll most likely be mixing coolant & oil=mayo. This is the feared type of leak. Only fix is to swap a new stock 1 or an upgrade in. Try swapping those 2 seals 1st. Make sure to seat em properly. More likely than not, your leak should be solved.

I built my own and use (and slightly modified) a oil cooler thermostat.

Aka it doesnt send the oil through the cooler till it hits opperating temp, helping it to warm up faster, and then as it gets hot it sends it out front to get cooled off.

I used a Bell A2W intercooler core for mine and welded up my own end tanks.

Well, looks like I'm reviving a dead post, but I've just bought pretty much the exact thing you have there. Did you run into any issues with the stock cooler lines that route into the factory cooler attached to the oil filter housing? I noticed they cross over behind the engine and one feeds back into the block, do I need to plug anything there?

I run a sa/fb 1st gen rx7 oil cooler myself. Still the best core ever made.

I know i open very old thread.. but i have some questions about oil cooling.. maybe someone here will have answer.

After full rebuild of the engine (was rebuilded because of possible failure after to much temperature on the track) we added oil cooler kit with mishimoto thermostat.

The cooler may seem to big but this is a topic for another day.. because we cannot achieve temperature to even open thermostat (88C).. max was 76C.

I don't know, we put hoses in the filter housing wrong way? Or simply size of the hoses to thermostat makes them cool oil not only flow..

Some photos of install

That almost looks like too big of an oil cooler for it fo reach temp for the thermostat to even open so it can flow. I know mine (although not installed is probably half that size for the core. Really depends on where you live as you may not even need the cooler. Also it looks like your kit you opted for the external thermostat so not sure if there's any extra hoops when fitting that not just the lines and couplers and plate. But I'd do the obvious and make sure the hoses aren't switched around and let the car run for a few to see if the thermostat opens. If it never reaches the set number you might want to go to smaller core cooler so you can bring up the temp a few degrees. There's a reason why these generally aren't very big for our cars.
