O2 simulator

Can anyone provide more information on an O2 simulator for the Cooper S ?I have a Quicksilver exhaust w/cat and i am now getting the error code p0420 "catalyst system efficiency below threshold (bank 1)".I have less than 3000 miles on this exhaust and refuse to replace the cat.Does anyone sell them? Can i build one?Any info. would be greatly appreciated.

Why would it fail so quickly?

It sounds like something is broken.

A catalytic converter should last more than 3000 miles.

hI bISCH, i HAVE A 2003 COOPER S WITH 15% PULLEY, ALTA INTAKE, MAGNAFLOW EXHAUST AND i JUST INSTALLED A NEW HEADER 4-2-1 WITHOUT CAT AND MY SES LIGHT CAME ON AND THEN OFF AND ON AGAIN AND IS STILL ON. CAN YOU TELL ME IF THIS O2 SIMULATOR WILL WORK WITH THE COOPER??

iN THE LIST OF CARS THE DEALER SHOWS DOES NOT LIST THE COOPER AS IF IT WORKS.

THANKS YOU FOR YOUR HELP.

PS: I WILL DYNO MY CAR TO SEE WHAT KIND OF GAIN I GOT FROM THIS HEADER WITHOUT CAT. THE BUT DYNO SAYS THERE IS A LITLE MORE TORQUE ON IT. THE SOUND WITH THE MAGNAFLOW IS GREAT, NOT TO LOUD, WELL I HAVE A 65 MUSTANG 289 COBRA WITH HEADERS AND AND NO MUFFLERS STRAIGHT TO THE SIDES AND THAT IS LOUD.

Correct, there is no excuse for an aftermarket cat failing to do its job properly. In the VW world with the 1.8T, some aftermarket downpipe/cats cause problems while others do not:

I had a an ATP 3" cat in my GTI for over 20k with no problems at all. jlm is running the same cat in his MINI and thousands of miles later, no codes. Here's the cat in question:

You must understand that almost all aftermarket headers/exhaust systems use OBD I CATS. This is for two reasons, first the cost, and second the size. The O2 sensor downstream of the CAT is an efficiency sensor and OBD I CATS will not work in this system. Replace the CAT and your problem should be solved.

OH, by the way. There two different types of OBD II generic CATS. One is approved for 49 states and the other is approved for use in California. The California is a little more expensive but it is also suppose to be a little better and last longer. The California OBD II CAT is what I have in my car. Is it truly better then the 49 state one, I don’t know.

O2 sensor downstream

D1JL, thanks for the feed back but in this application with header there is no CAT. Would like to satisfy the ECU with 02 sensor simulater and leave the check engine light for other warning codes while on the track.

Good Luck, I have an O2 simulator it cost over $500.00. Although the CAT efficiency sensor is an O2 sensor it reads a different signal because of the CAT. An O2 sensor produces its own voltage that varies with mixture from .1 to .9 VDC and looks like a sinusoidal wave on an oscilloscope. The CAT efficiency sensor on the other hand puts out ALMOST a flat line at about .45 volts. The problem you are going to have is that the OBD II ECU not only checks for good or bad but also rationality. Remember that the output of the CAT efficiency will look just like the O2 sensor until the CAT gets hot. Then of course there the OBD II self tests and don’t forget the heater circuits.

Although I do have the Milltek, I'm afraid that it has eaten three rear O2 sensors.

I bought the O2 simulator in the thread above, but it rarely worked. We could never dial in the right settings. The ones that the manuafacturer suggested never worked.

Finally I just had to bite the bullet and buy another sensor. After 3000 miles, yet another rear sensor (#3 since I bought the Milltek header and catback) appears to have failed.

Not sure what to do now.

Anyone have an update about this product on single output O2 simulator for $25?
Does it work or not?

Or anyone try this from Pony Express for $20.95?
http://www.ponyexpressperformance.co...liminator.html

Seems now after about 1-2 years that many Milltek headers have trouble with the high flow cats and dash SES lights going on from error code P0420 "catalyst system efficiency below threshold (bank 1)"

Anyone find a reliable solution to this?
Switch back to a stock header?
Weld a stock cat to the Milltek header?
Switch to another aftermarket header (OBX on ebay) and weld a cat on that?
Please tell us about your successes.
