Drivetrain Upper Motor Mount
Upper Motor Mount
Hey guys, im not sure if i need a new upper motor mount, i have the tell tale signs i do need one, but i dont know if it has been replaced or not. so i was looking into solutions. and quite frankly other than the OEM is very expensive.
i like the VIP stabilizer, in conjunction with that, i did dig up that the old rubber mount could be retro fitted in, has anyone done this?
also has anyone created their own rubber mount? i was thinking of trying this

AudioNToxication would you recommend the side gearbox mount too? I definitely need the upper mount. And was thinking of getting the lower as well. I haven't seen many threads on the gearbox and was wondering if I should just do all 3 in a single pop if it would make a big difference.

yes, only $20. i have one, it works great. im still on my oem mount with 112k on the clock. it really restricts engine movement, and should bolt right to your engine on one side and the frame on another.
its a bit tricky to install, but what isnt on the mini!

my 04 jcw had one of these devices on the upper mount when i bought it, which was apparently installed at ~25k (before I owned it) along with the 2nd OEM upper mount that has just now failed at 55k... i would argue that this mount damper doesn't do much if anything to support the longevity of the OEM upper mount... maybe my 55k failure is simply misfortune, or maybe your 112k is your good fortune!
the good news -- installed the Vibra Technics (road version) this past weekend and i agree with AudioNToxication, it is very well made, and it's certainly worth it, considering the car already had two OEM mounts fail. FYI, the damper device doesn't fit with the beefy Vibra Technics installed, but it won't need it anyhow.
I went through 3 OEM mounts before I hit 110k miles. The first two lasted maybe 30k each. Then u put one of the tsw dampers on and the third lasted for the next 50k, but was on its way out when I installed the Vibra-technics. My lower was pretty trashed as well, good thing I popped for the lower at the same time.
I changed the bottom to a BSH and the polyurethane transmission mount while the TWS upper is just laying around. the stock one is there right now and no problems. I am wondering if it is worth changing the upper one if the stock one still works.
AudioNToxication How long did your TSW last again?

My tsw damper never died. The upper oem mount s on its way out though. If you did the other two mounts you are putting quite a lot of extra stress on the upper since the others don't want to move. I would whole heartedly stiffest the Vibra-technics upper. It works. My motor doesn't move. I don't notice the nvh anymore.
no, it bolts right to the engine block actually. its a pita to get the bolt tight, but you can do it with a large flathead screwdriver and a hammer; you hit the bottom edges of the bolt, tightens right up (also loosens too).
once you get the hang of it, you can take this thing off / on in under 5 minutes if you have to do servicing of the tensioner, or raise / lower the motor.
the key is to use the plate it comes with UNDER the frame so it spaces the damper away from the frame enough to keep it from hitting.
______ -frame
===> -plate
==( ) -damper
