Drivetrain unsolvable rebuild problem
unsolvable rebuild problem
So, I don't know if this should be under a different category. I have looked into other sites/ threads and found some similar troubles but nothing has helped with this so far.
so I will try to be as short as possible.
early model 2004 r53 cooper s
bought the car with 80000 on the clock, came with cai,
car now has 90001,
so I have had the car sitting in a garage for the last year rebuilding the engine and some misc stuff.
mods as of now 278/280 cat cam,
550cc injectors, -19% pulley, jcw head, stock compression, new rings and bearings, rmw flash tune, lightweight clutch and flywheel,
I have spoke to Jan about this but he is thinking an engine problem not the tune.
now for the problem, car starts and idles fine, a little low(1000rpm), but doesn't stall, but when I tap the gas rpm goes up and stays for a sec and slowly creeps back down and then stalls, starts back up fine, car will not stop with this stalling, and if I try to let off clutch to move the car shuts off, not rough like stalling but it seems as if the car actually shutdown when I try to move
sorry for being long, I just try to not to leave details out that may be needed

My bet is the camshaft.
I had the exact same problem with my 278/280 cam from Cat Cams.
I had the one from VAC motorsports, not the one from 1320, and could never get it to run right at the low RPM's with a pre-facelift ECU.
Worked fine on a ViPEC after a lot of fiddling.
Car would start fine, but unless you VERY GENTLY accelerated above 2k rpm, and then started feathering the clutch, the car would fall on its face and die.
If you didnt blip the throttle carefully on the way down after a small rev -> die
if you tried to drive at low RPM the car was learchy and usually stalled out.
I have now swapped cams to a Cat Cam turbo camshaft as I am going twincharged, but my .02 is the cam.
If you have the stock one still on hand throw it back in and give it a whirl.
Doesn't take too long to swap, and the cam bolt is under $5, so it's sort of a "why not check" solution.
Best of luck!

Thank you for being detailed, sound identical except without the wierd rpm stayin up, but yes I still have the stock on hand so we will see, maybe ill be investing in vipec very soon, and goodluck with the twincharge, thatll be real fun to drive
Yes I have done that, I was able to drive the car around like that but still stalls when coming to a stop, so ill try swapping the cam today, and hopefully that will rule that problem out, maybe ill just throw a rmw street in till the vipec,
Ok, so I swapped the cam after work back to stock, havent driven yet but sounds fine again so far, idles fine, no weird peddle, so hopefully ill have some daylight tomorrow to test it, starting to feel relieved,
good to hear!
Hopefully it works for you!
Shame the cam doesn't, but I was / am in the same boat.
I now have 4 cams at my place
Stock one that is galled
Stock one that is in good condition
CatCam 278/280 cam (non 1320 profile)
Cat Cam turbo Street Cam (same lift as 278/280 cam, but with less overlap and duration)
