DownPipe question, NOT the normal TQ question

I have been looking at exhaust and reading all i can and the normal debates come up about size , drone etc....
My question is...
Why does a catless DP have the swell or step to a bigger diameter and then back down ? If there is no catalist inside to re-strick the flow why not just stay the same diameter ?

They might use the same top and end of the pipe, for some that want a high flow 100-200 cell cat. Too me it's best to go catless all the way.

I agree catless.... but it looks like its the same DP for cat or catless...
if i go catless i wouldn't want the pipe to swell out and then back down.... same diameter pipe all the way down ...

I'm new here and not sure how to post pic... let me see if i can figure it out

well i wanted it to be bigger...lol will work on that...
but you can see the redlines , seams like if you don't have cat inside you don't need to swell out to a larger surface area to keep the flow up due to the resistance of the cat inside....
just keep it same size.... by swelling out you are creating a stall in the flow for that pressure to build in the bigger area before it starts to flow out the rest of the exhaust.....

I think Resonated would melt or get destroyed

WMW Catless Downpipe

As you can see the pipe is just straight. If you had a change in size it would cause turbulence in the exhaust flow.

makes absolutely no sense to drop more money for an iPE. it's just a pipe with a couple of bends, flanges and mounting brackets, and an O2 sensor bung. proper fitment is 90% of it.

I won't flame, but if you want the best, iPE is the route. MINI owners can't justify paying for something as expensive, but I don't think of it that way. You have to consider, buying a MINI in Japan or Taiwan is 200% it's value in the US, so for them to pay $3-4k for an exhaust is chunk change. I don't think anyone realizes or puts that into perspective. It's a supercar exhaust company.

I'm still the one and only person to have this exhaust. That either shows how attention to detail I am, or how nuts I am. I enjoy what I do, and many times, what I've been able to do with the MINI has been money well spent. I'll never make back what I put into it, but I'm a car enthusiast, if you don't already know, it's a money pit.

no flame war intended. I'm simply a value proposition kind of consumer. spending more than 10% of the msrp of a car for an exhaust seems extreme to me. I would sooner trade my MCS in for a GP. I understand the enthusiast bit - I'm just not a subscriber. to each his own, and happy tuning!

Of course, I think beyond the msrp reasoning because that'll only hinder my mod bug fun. I mean ****, I've gone through 5 sets of wheels, 3 suspensions, and 3 exhausts....

Well i saw someone with a quote on here...
" after being told i would never get the money back I put into my car..
I told them i get my money's worth everytime i drive it....."

I think that is a very true statement.... yes you can get coilovers that beat you up everytime you drive for 900 bucks... yes they are coilovers, yes they lower your car, yes they have adjustments..... but are they really worth beating YOU up everytime you drive the car......Its suppose to be enjoyable to drive your car
Not getting off into the money pit thing.... to each their own right....

John , looks like your catless does swell out. Did you by chance look inside the pipe to see if it had a resonator in that part ?

That is art work right there Gents

Nah, I never bothered to look inside to see if it swells. I didn't install the system since I was the first iPE system, GT Auto Concepts did to document the install.

It's a money pit whether you spend $30, or $3000

Though everything I've put in has been expensive it hits the mark about the driving experience every time. The ride is supple, and the sound exhilarating.

The downpipe iPE is a 200 cell high flow cat. It is NOT catless.
