Damaged cam?

I just bought a used Newman cam and I noticed some damage/imperfections. Seller said it was only used for 6k miles. How bad is it and should I just get a refund?

That's done, Newman had some bad cores a while back, possibly one of those.

Good luck, honestly someone should have Never sold that.

I was hoping that wasn't the case =/. Thanks BlwnAway for confirming my suspicions. I'm going to try to get a refund now. Hopefully all goes well

Haha yeah I figured. Learned my lesson about buying used engine parts. Not going to cheap out and buying a brand new one this time around. Should I go for RMW street cam or NS1?

you may be able to contact newman directly and see. if it was in fact a bad core, then they may help you. If it was a none issue they should be able to look it up by the batch number stamped into the end of it.

and if you are upgrading, get the CatCam street cam. (the 1320 one is a bit aggressive unless you are racing it all of the time and do not have to worry about hill starts or around town imo. <- learned the hard way)

I didn't see any numbers stamped on the ends of the cam. I emailed Newman about it anyways. We'll see what happens.

I've heard good things about the Cat Cam as well. Gonna have to research about it a bit more though

Bad thing About buying a used cam is you might be getting the sellers stock cam in the box they got their performance cam.....
Funny how many folks say they could not notice a performance change after getting a used cam....
Not saying the world is filled with scammers....but...

Biggest advantage to buying your used Mini parts from here & other spec. Mini sights, less chance of it happening because of the exposure it brings, but there's always that chance no matter what.
Good Luck.

I wonder how well the original buyers car ran for the 6000 miles it was in his engine, and is this why he is now selling it to you?? Not sure if paypal could help or not in this situation. Is a used part and was advetised as a used part. I've been waiting for someone to say " that will buff out" ... As metioned above contact Newman and see what they say. They may own up to the bad core, or may say since you are the 2nd owner they can't do anything.. If you have to buy a new cam I'd talk to RMW, he is in your state..

^^ so are most of the mini tuners :P, and alta is just north in washington iirc

As for cams though, rmw street is newman, and mynes deals in the NM, megamini, and cat varieties.

I personally regret getting the "big" cat cam (270/278 duration) camshaft. yes it is huge and makes ungodly top end power, but my car lost that around town drive-ability fun. Always had to have the motor singing (not always a bad thing, just missed being able to punch it out of a turn at 2500 rpm's and getting a little pull)

The seller bought the cam from another guy and decided to sell after not using it. He asked the original about the cam and here's what he said:
"Not really sure what to say, the cam worked perfectly when it was in my car, came out then went straight into the wrapper and box. The cam is going to show wear on the lobe where it has contact on the engine and it is moving. But as for the course areas he has taken a photo of around the lobe, there are not in contact with anything and how all newman cams come."

The seller then turns on me with this:
"Another problem i have is that if the pictures you sent do show a cam that is not serviceable how i do i know that it is a picture of the cam i sent and not one you already had?"

Sigh... Hopefully PayPal can sort this out. I should have been more careful and asked for detailed pictures. This is from the MiniTorque forum btw. Teaches me to be too trusting on forums

Good luck....
IMO always use caution when dealing with "newer" members....
Names that have been around a bit tend o be safer, even worth paying a slight premium to...

He joined MT on May 2011 and has 300+ posts. I thought that would have been good enough =/. I'm just sticking with NAM from now on haha.
