Non Power steering Rack

So on my way home from work last night, my power steering pump started making a terrible noise. Instead of dropping a load on a new one, I would rather just replace the rack with a non power unit, anyone know of a source for one that will fit a 2006 mini?

thanks!

Beech

Can't you just drive it with the dead pump and call that manual steering?

thanks buzz saw!

leaf, the local boy (i live across the lake), well, anytime ive tried driving a car with power steering, with out power steering, its been pretty ugly, tho that maybe becuase the car is off, and coasting. none of my other cars have PS, and this will be my first foray into PS issues lol. tho in the link i just read, looks like i have options, the pump just suddenly got really noisy, so want to nip in in the butt before anytthing really breaks,

Sure, you can "call" it that, but it's really not, just be prepared for a workout & to think ahead more when you're driving, quick steering will be a thing of the past.

For those of you who don't know or have never experienced "manual" steering, there's a big difference between "non" power assist steering & "non-opperational" power assist steering.

try parallel parking a mini with failed power steering....
Very different ratio than on an old manual Honda....different sized steering wheel too.....might need to get a bigger one too.....
IMO would get rid of lots of what makes a mini a mini and more like a old Buick.....I'd rather sell my car if I could not fix it....why become a mini poser...a mini that looks like a mini, but handles like a land barge....

Yeah, with a dead power steering pump a Mini is a ***** to turn. Had to drive it with a p/s pump that would work when it wanted to until it died. Unless you replace it with something else or change the gearing, it's not really fun. MY 92 Geo Metro wasn't that bad with no p/s, but it was made like this and it had skinny tires.

fwiw, Ive been driving the car since oct with the power steering fuse pulled out. Its heavy, but you get used to it, the only place its REALLY noticable is in a parking lot. Heck, to tell you the truth, Ive all but forgot its not working. When the weather gets better, Ill loop the lines off the rack, and remove the pump. On the up side, while removing the fuse, I found out a mouse had ate the insulation of a bunch of the wires in the fuse box, so I wrapped them up, and the intermittent "all the dash lights come on" and since gone away
