Killmatic, I think that the answer depends on what you plan on doing with your car. If you plan to run your car on the track exclusively then a light flywheel is for you. If you are using your car for a daily driver and will only occasionally do a track driving school or an occasional autocross then a light flywheel is not for you. Take it from your brother, there are drivability issues with a light flywheel. You have no torque coming off the line. Yes, you will have greater throttle response at speed, but day to day driving will suck.

That is why I put on a Stage II Spec clutch but kept the stock flywheel. It will store energy better and you can do those great burnouts.

Smoke em if ya gottem,

JD

12.5 lb. Fidanza

Pro's;
Easier and quicker to match revs on downshifts.
Noticeably quicker acceleration

Cons:
Slight noise at idle.
You have to shift quickly or blip either up or down as the revs drop very quickly
More difficult to modulate throttle in autocross situations
More difficult to effect normal starts and autocross starts (as I have a Spec Stage 3 clutch its difficult to tell how much of this is the flywheel and how much is the clutch)

I like it!

does lighter flywheel = faster acceleration due to the fact that the rpms climb faster?????

A lighter flywheel is faster because the engine does not have to store as much power in the flywheel. It get to go to the ground instead. Remember your gyroscopes when you were a kid.

Throttle response is better for the same reason. Shifting is easier. Transmission wear is reduced because the synchronizers do no have to match speeds as much.

12.5 lb. Fidanza

Actually the Fidanza is 14.5 pounds. Madness had a typo on their site I noticed that they fixed. Thats where I got mine.

I had a 9.5 pounder then went to the 14.5 pound. The 9.5 pound version is way too light for every day driving. It was either on or off. There are some noise issues with these guys but it was expected. I like the spool up. I would stick with the Fidanza if I had to do it over again.

My friend also has a Fidanza flywheel and it is 12.5 lbs; we actually weighed it on a scale and it was within half an ounce to it.

The madness one looks different in that the center section where it bolts to the engine crank is much thicker than the one he got directly from fidanza- consequently, he had to use shorter flywheel bolts.

Although the MCS flywheel is 27#, I think the MC flywheel is only 18#.
Not that there's much point in going to all the bother of putting a
lightened flywheel in an MC.

No, but maybe it makes sense to put the flywheel of the cooper in the MCS...
