alta cobb

very interested in getting the alta tune, and was wondering if members sell these often or are they hard to find used? also what would be a next tune that is very good but less expensive? what i like about the alta is that you can install and uninstall / play with the maps etc. vs sending in your ecu to get tuned. comments anyone?

I don't know what options if any exist or the 2011+ MCS.

Based on what I've read over the last year or so I don't think there will ever be a flash tune device available for the 2011+ MCS. Problems exist with the ability to Flash the ECU on the 2011+ MCS cars.

When MINI/BMW changed the MCS to the Full VANOS engine for the 2011 LCI they changed the ECU. The new ECU has a design that severely limited the ability to be "flashed". Several groups are working to get around this problem but as yet I don't think there has been any success. Sorry!

Simple fix. Go to the dealer, plunk down $2300, and get the JCW tuning kit. Done.

I believe you can remove the ECU and send it to certain vendors for tuning.

I'm still not sure when the 2011+ software will be done for the AP, but it will get done. Cobb is working really hard at getting the BMW N55 software finished. The ability to tune the ECU is capable, just not the ability to flash via the OBD port. The engineers have recently been able to flash a full image through the port so it's progressing. It will just take more time to finish.

Since both the BMW and MINI software is similar the ability to tune one will result in the ability to tune the other, just be patient the entire BMW community is waiting for a tuning solution not just us MINI guys.

yeah you do have to send it to them, but at least it can be done for only 600 bucks, better than what ive been hearing that no software is yet available.

Yeah, and say goodbye to your warranty. From what I understand about these services is that they open up the ECU and make a number of modifications to the unit's internal wiring etc.

BTW, I have read that MINI dealers have been instructed to refuse to work on any MINI discovered with a doctored ECU and report it to the company. No service on the car until the ECU is replaced at the customer's expense... No warranty and possible no service!

i spoke with him on the phone today and he said they program them through the port, and they get 30hp and 20 plus torque from the tune on stock engine. he also said that if i was to get a aftermarket intercooler i can get 60torque.

he mentioned that the software is not detectable by the dealer and if they overwrite it then they will retune it free of charge. idk sounds promising.

They may not be able to see that a tune was there but they can still know. If you hit say 19-22psi of boost on a stock MCS they will know as it far exceed the stock limit. If the rev limiter was bumped up 250-500 rpms they can see that too as the car exceeded what it was supposedly set at.

thats true , but they woudlnt be testing your max rpm/ psi unless you had some serious problems with the car that they needed to fix, you can also get it uninstalled before going to the dealer for major service.

I believe the is that revs and boost are (I think?) stored in the ECU memory. The dealer wouldn't need to rev out your car--all the data they need should be in the car's computer.
