I had a k&n drop in filter for my mcs . Didn't really see and gain well came with car , plus I wanted to be able to hear the s/c alot more ( I lobe the whine ) or I did a foam style cone for a cai !! I think it works alot better plus it is alot louder now

Just wondering what is the best style of filters for are cars , sometimes I see a foam filter on turbos and sc cars , then I see a k&n style soo what's the difference if there is ????

For one thing, a properly oiled foam filter actually filters.

In mechanic's world, K&N are called "dirt suckers."

However, too much oil on the foam filter is bad, as is no oil at all.

I use the stock set up. Plastic insulates heat better than the metal boxes, and direct underhood heated air is no good. Plus the OEM paper filter will keep your engine the cleanest.

 

On Alta's website they have a pretty detailed review of foam filters vs. Panel type filters. From what I understand they both do a great job getting the air in when clean, but a foam filter performs better when dirty compared to a K&N type. I recommend reading the whole thing on they're website. It's pretty interesting.

I still have my stock airbox In the car , I just took off the lid and the foam cone fit right in there. Pic shown below

 

i put the k and n into my r57 a year after i bought it. big noticable difference! should have put the k and n in on day 1 and enjoyed it.

 

having alot of motorcycle experiences over the years, ive seen a number of motors that were worn out...about half the cases had a k and n or similar filter... in those applications, a clean and properly oiled filter MAY have saved the rings and valves from dirt/water/ etc

but, just like any discussion, there are success and failure stories. Many people swear by their k and n types...but im sure some have sweared AT them as well .

personally, I'll take the extra work to clean and oil my foam filter. Having an extra one for the mini, just like I do for my bikes, allows for a quick swap and do the maintanence later . Somehow makes ME feel better

 

one reason why you should stay away from oil is because it throws off your map sensor.. now i'm with the k and n filter

 

the stock paper filter out performs all other element types in flow and filtering every time... this is a bit of a moot discussion as there is TONS of research out there on the differences of element types and even between brands.

also, you get more oil on your map sensor from the crank vent, a properly oiled foam element wont foul anything.
