Anybody know what the little squarish blob on the dash to the left of the steering wheel is? I tried blowing it up but couldn't make out what it was.

WAY overpriced for what you get. I am personally very disapointed in what BMW gave us. It's a poser only. Only value would be a possible collector car WAY down the road. What SHOULD BMW have built?
If they consulted me, my MC40 would be a performance car like this;

-Carbon fiber hood
-Carbon fiber mirrors
-Carbon fiber door handles
-Carbon fiber wheel flares
-No power windows, locks, radio, or A/C
-A custom mixed exterior paint color, NOT Chile Red
-4-point harness
-roll bar
-180 hp 1.6 L Tritec
-Eliminate rear wiper
-Larger 4 wheel disc's w/red calipers

I don't like it. It's not "me". I get enough stares in my stealth DS/B MCS.
I think it would be a good collectors item, put it in a box and bring it out in 20yrs.

>>No way that was going to happen. Almost 10 years ago, BMW listened to the enthusiasts and built the M3 Lightweight just like that. (Very stripped down, no A/C, no radio, lightweight panels, some extra performance parts and in very limited numbers.) The dealers couldn't sell them. Some cars stayed on the dealers' lots more than 2 years.

>>Time will tell whether or not JCW cars or MC40 cars will bring a premium over a "run of the mill" MINI Cooper S. But for now, for me, what you get isn't worth what you have to pay.

Yes, but when you look at the prices for '95 M3 LTW's, they are through the roof for original, unmolested cars. Mainly because so few of them didn't end up as race cars - which is what they were meant to be. Any dealer that ordered one for stock got what they deserved. Very specialized car built for a specific use, not to be a the GT "luxo-cruiser" that the M3 basically is. I'm not saying the E36 isn't a great car. After driving JerseyGirl's MCS and M3 back to back yesterday and today, I'd choose the M3 if I were able to buy one.

I agree MINI should offer a stripped MCS, but on a order-only basis for those who would want a car mainly for track use. This would be the ultimate "spec racer." A stripper JCW... now that would be a sweet car...

I agree the MC40 does reek of "Pontiac Excitement!"

I have no doubt that MINI will sell out of the entire run before the first one leaves the assembly line... the bottom line is the bottom line and in reality MINI will produce the cars they believe they can sell.

I just heard from my Mini dealer that the MC40's MSRP will be $27,449.
