Drivetrain The Last Oil Catch Can Question?
The Last Oil Catch Can Question?
Hello! I think I have read most of the Oil Catch Can threads and have one last question...
If I don't want to plug the passenger side and only have the money for one Oil Catch Can, which side should it go on? I have read that the passenger side spits out more crap until "boost" comes in. Then, when boost kicks in, the dirver's side is the side that spits out more crap.
Sorry to raise this up again as I have seen numerous "hot" debates over this. I will probably purchase another Oil Catch Can (just bout the Draft 42 Stealth OCC) in another few months. Also, I rolled my first Clubman and purchased a used 2009 Clubman S with 36k on it. Is it too late for this mod? I did Seafoam and got a good clud of white smoke.
Thanks,
Parker

If you run a OCC but don't plug the passenger plug, you'll still pull in oil vapor for most of your driving habits, because you're not boosting 100%; its more like 20% or less. That means the 80% of driving is pulling the nasty vapor right into the intake manifold through the passenger port.
Bottom line: at least plug the passenger PCV port to start. The OCC can come after if you're tight on budget.

I already own a 42 Draft Designs STEALTH OCC but can't decide what side to hook it up to. Is there a less expensive way to plug the passenger side than buying the Boost Tap from BSH? Also, I called 42DD and they said that I could possibly T both in and out of the OCC?
There's a member on here that sells a plastic plug for the passenger port. I believe it's "czar", but I might be wrong. Without the plug, you're best bet is to install the OCC on the passenger port.
I would NOT recommend plugging the Passenger PCV hose without having a catch can on the driver side. Although you may see the Passenger hose to be the cause to carbon build up and oil puddling in the intake manifold, it is also the most direct route to the combustion chamber where the PCV gases were originally intended to be destined and defused. By sending them all to the turbo and intercooler without a catch can to filter out the mixture first, you are likely going to be doing your engine more harm than good in the long run.
As for T'ing off both hoses to one inlet on the catch can, you can do so only if the output is to the intake pipe. This is also unnecessary as the one port on the driver side is more than capable of handling the entire PCV load out at its current diameter. There might be more problems than its worth by sourcing a solution like this, but please let me know the outcome if you get it to work.

If you plug the passenger side PCV line, you must put a catch can on the line to the turbo, because all the oil and water vapor will be diverted through the turbo and intercooler, not a good thing!

After speaking with Sushil earlier today, I purchased the Boost Tap from a local BSH dealer and will do the project tonight. Thanks Sushil!
My wife purchased a 42 Draft Designs Stealth OCC on a gift card and I don't want her to have to hassle with the return/refund. I will locate some fittings and probably end up cutting the PCV hose on the drivers side and install the 42DD OCC. So, I'll have a BSH Boost Tap/ 42 DD OCC combo.
Then I can focus on getting rid of the noisemaker!
When I spoke to Sushil, I mentioned that my daughter wants a Mini but I am torn between a Justa or an S. My previous Clubman was a non-S and while it felt underpowered, I did not have the "S" potential issues that I may have with my used 2009S.
Thanks to everyone for your guidance!

I got it done!
The hardest part was fabricating a bracket and finding the correct size of brass fittings. I did do surgery on the PCV hose but I think it will work quite well. My dealer knows that I'm going to use a catch can and he supports the modification.
Thanks, Parker

seeping oil
Well, I thought I had it all good but now notice that oil is seeping out from the drivers side PCV "out" and pooling under where the hose slips on and then works its way around the spark plug housing? I really hope that I can get this figured out. I have read so many posts that this mod is a good thing but now I am having doubts. The hose just slips on with very little resistance and as you know, is only held on by the plastic clip. Is there a way to take that top cover off so I can put on a hose clamp there?

It is stressing me out:

HELP!
It is stressing me out:

I went back outside and took the OUT hose off again and looked inside. There was an accumulation of oil in the hose. I've gotta think that when the car is off, that oil is running back towards the engine and is seeping between the port fitting and the hose. I put a zip tie around the hose and reinstalled the clip. I'll see what it looks like in the morning. I wish I could talk BSH into selling me the fitting so I can get past this hurdle.
Thanks!
