Exhaust Help

Hey all, I am new on here and am looking for some advice. So I am getting ready to buy a R56 MCS and am trying to decide on an exhaust. I have looked at everything Borla, Supersprint, Alta, Invidia... What are some recommendations on exhaust you guy may have. I want something that has a nice sound but am having a hard time trying to decide. Input Please!

Sorry to be blunt but this Drivetrain forum is SO littered with this exact thread. Theres certainly a handful of helpful ones that already have all the information you're looking for discussed, compared, videos shared, its going to provide you with a LOT better information than what you'll get from a few sparse people giving their opinion based on what they have, its ALL been done.

Please use the search function, so that when others use it like they're supposed to, they aren't led to threads like this asking the same question with dead end answers. If you simply search for "exhaust" or "best exhaust" under the 2nd gen drivetrain forum, you'll find lots of helpful info. Look for threads that have many replies, that'll help you in finding the more popular threads. GOOD LUCK.

My ultimate suggestion for you is to use the search function. There are probably a hundred discussions about this already.

thanks man, I do know how that works. HAHA I have gone through a ton of pages of great info but am still unsure. I have also watched like 6 hours of youtube videos and am still stuck. I believe the guys name on here is Thumper something and i LOVED his set up with the Invidia exhaust and Riss Racing DP but was curious as to how bad the drone is on that set up

IMHO, Magnaflow is the way to go unless you enjoy burning money. Got my muffler and had it installed for less than $250. You will not see any performance gains without a downpipe so it was very hard for me a justify spending upwards of $1,000 for a full system.

And to top it off I've had people randomly come up to tell me how good it sounds.

I recommend Magnaflow too. I really like mine and get compliments too. There are a lot of good exhaust systems for the R56, but most are expensive when compared to the Magnaflow, at least if you go the custom route with Magnaflow.

With those kinds of gains, I should be destroying JCWs with a quicksilver exhaust

If you don't have the means or plans to re-tune your car then do not use a catless DP. It will lose a significant amount of Hp / Tq below 4500 and any power gains it does make will be in the 6500 and up range.

Mike, I am just wondering if you have seen a Dyno on this. I always thought that this could be the case but have not anything either one way or another in terms of a graph. Thanks.

When we were testing turbo backs with no cats we saw this with pretty much every combination we tried. It's the reason we waited till we could tune the car before we even released our turbo back exhaust. The factory tune is just not adaptive enough to deal with the loss of back pressure.

I have a dyno chart saved on the test dyno we use. Problem is it's 30 miles away. To bad I didn't know this yesterday I could have grabbed it. I can swing by this weekend and see if I can grab it.

Not the best comparison since they are different cars... BUT. Same day, same dyno, same temperatures, humidity, etc.

STOCK R56 MCS: (172.8 whp)
http://vimeo.com/3931843

Another STOCK R56 MCS: (170.7 whp)
http://vimeo.com/3930891

Stock exhaust, super AGS intake: (174.9 whp)
http://vimeo.com/3917294

JCW exhaust/jcw intake: (173.7 whp)
http://vimeo.com/3915772

Magnaflow 2.5" DPback, 2nd cat delete, alta intake: (171.0 whp)
http://vimeo.com/3930460

There was also a Invidia exhaust with alta intake that pulled 172 or 173 whp. No video unfortunately.

Yes, these are just peak HP numbers and don't tell you much about area under the curve.. or torque for that matter, but the magnaflow torque was same peak as others, right around 194-199 wtq is where people stood.

Whats all this mean? Exhausts without tunes aren't giving people the "30 whp" they think they're getting. It sounds more aggressive and louder, sure thats definitely true. But performance on a stock ECU? Not gonna be there.

Now that JCW exhaust R56 you saw, got dyno tuned by RMW:

Same dyno, about a year later.

That magnaflow exhaust R56, Also RMW dyno tuned on the same day, same dyno.

NOW look at the differences. Same mods essentially otherwise, theres a FMIC on the first one, which may have helped pull higher HP numbers, but it was a stronger R56 to start out with anyways (variances in stock motors). BUT, look at torque, 227 wtq VS 232 wtq. Not only is the wheel torque value higher, look at which one spools faster-- both were started at 2000 RPMs, peak torque on the JCW exhaust isn't until 4200 RPMS! even if we look at where it starts to plateau, its at 3400 rpms. You can see in the magnaflow system (straight pipe from the DP back at 2.5 inch vs the JCW 2.25-2.3 ish?) reaches peak torque at just around 2900 RPMS.

THATS where the difference is.

The first graph looks smoother, but look at the scaling differences, thats why.

good write up soopercuper . even when I got my catted DP I felt like it lost a bit of low down power but gave me a lot more up high from 4500rpm till red line.

Initially we were using the Alta stage 2 map for our catless turbo back, it worked ok, but that map really isn't written to fully support this. Alta can probably get a canned tune to you that will work pretty good. A pro-tune would be the best option, but that can be a trip for any one not in SoCal, Oregon, or Texas
