It's a super, not a turbo. Turbos have blowoff valves that vent to the atmosphere. The SC just recirculates the unpressurized air. With the SC, we get a whine when we wind it up. You can hear more whine with a CAI. Alta seems to be the loudest. I believe they do make fake blowoff valves that just make noise, if that's what you're into.

ya it probably had an aftermarket turbo added. Or it may have had the m7 ags air intake, which you may have mistaken for the sound of a BOV. no BOV on a blower/supercharger system...

You can hear some change in airflow if you have an aftermarket CAI and are shifting between hard accelerations. But it won't be the same as a blowoff valve. The R56s don't even have one; they use a recirculation valve.

More fun than any blow off noise is the whine of the supercharger when the revs pick up, and the deaccelleration burble when you lift. No turbo blow off sounds nearly as nice.

I like my r53, but I'd take a turbo spool/blow off valve sound over the whiny supercharger any day.

r53!!! r56 are too "smooth" r53's are the originals. they have more of that go-kart feel that mini's are known for.

I also prefer the look of the R53. When was shopping for my MINI the R53 is all I wanted. The R56 is too bulbous IMO. Still a good car, I just prefer the R53 personally.

R53 rocks! R53 JCW rocks even more! Turbos don't blow, they suck.

i had my 07 r56 for about 2 years. and it was wayyy to smooth. atleast for me.. before i test drove my r53 i was expecting the same "smoothness" but as soon as i turned it on it felt like a completly different car. it felt wayyy sportier. i know for sure im never going to regret buying a mini. the burble and popping from the exhaust and whine from the supercharger just gives me goose-bumps. iv told all my friends and family to buy a mini. so far 3 have joined our side. but all 3 of them are non S's but its still a MINI!
