R56S Custom Exhaust question

I went to a custom exhaust shop yesterday to get an estimate for a custom exhaust system for my 08 MCS. The guy quoted me $325.00 from the second cat bck. He would not remove the second cat. This included a Magnaflow muffler with aftermarket tips.

The installer advised the exhaust pipe will be aluminized steel. Not stainless. My question is Aluminized Steel OK for the price? ($325) He said He doesnt stock stainless pipe because it is too expensive and most customers dont want to pay for it. I have not comitted to the job yet. He also said he would bump up the pipe size to 2.5". He said 3" is way to big and I would loose alot of bottom end torque.

Thanks AXO

SS exhaust is way overkill for the vast majority of customers. An aluminized system will still probably outlast the car unless you have a real issue with rust and salt. Never had a system rust out on me. And I would agree, 2.5" is plenty big.

What's the point if you have to keep the 2nd cat? If your vehicle inspection only checks for a check engine light and doesn't do a tailpipe test than you can get rid of the 2nd cat.

I agree with the steel chosen for you. You don't have to deal with the road salt that us Northerners get to experience that eats everything alive. It should last you awhile.

I told the guy the JCW does not come with second cat. He still wouldn't remove it. He must have been hasseled by the muffler police for removing cats. I plan on having one made somewhere else. 2.5" straight pipe with a Magnaflow Muffler.

Thanks for the replies.

so the second cat adds noise??

I have both a JCW and stock exhaust, and was wondering what it would be like to pair the stock catted front with the JCW rear portion lol

Hey man I have an 09' MCS and Im trying to do a straight pipe from the turbo all the way back which obviously is incredibly illegal but it needs to be done. Do you have a video of how loud yours is? just trying to get an idea.

I would post a video but launch control prevents me from revving over 4K when clutch is in or car is in neutral :( My exhaust is 3in. turbo back no cats

Hey Guys,

This is the thread to the exhaust I am going to go with. BostonR56 has this system and several videos on Youtube. Search for akakong88 on youtube and you will find his videos.

Its a soft touch limit at 4K. Its not anything cool like a 2-step. I just routed the wastegate back into the downpipe to quiet it down.

This past Friday I had My Second Cat and Resonator removed ($60 welded). I immediately notice that the Turbo spools up much quicker! There was a seat of the pants improvement! The sound also improved! No Drone at all! Highway speeds with the windows up were slightly noticable. With the Stereo on, not noticable at all. Unfortunately the Kid in Me wants louder. So I order a Polished Stainless Magnaflow with a 3" inlet and two 3.5" tips. I will be running 2.5" pipe straight (No bends) back from the first exhaust hanger to the Magnaflow muffler. It should sound pretty good when I'm done. I will keep you posted!

AXO

This mod can be reversed back to Stock for under a $100 bucks.

Sorry for raining on your parade after ordering the part, but why did you choose to get a 3" inlet exhaust if you're planning on a 2.5" pipe? Not sure how it'll change the sound, but it'll change the flow characteristics a bit (maybe for the better!)

Mines 2.5 pipe to 2.5 inlet and dual 2.25 outlet to 4" angled tips. Fills the rear diffuser void perfect. I got lucky with my welder/installer, I told him how OCD and **** I am about even gaps all the way around (aka perfectly center), and he got them to within 2mm of center

The reason I ended up ordering a Muffler with a 3" inlet was due to the Tips. I wanted a dual walled tip, So I opted for an universal Muffler with the tips already installed from Magnaflow. I think it looks better that way. (Cleaner)

My mechanic got me a deal on a Magnaflow Polished Stainless Steel muffler with the tips I wanted for $185.00. So I said go for it. Hence the 3" inlet. I am hoping I don't have an issue with the 3.5" tips fitting in the gap. I am not opposed to a little trimming if needed.

Kepp the cops away

You'll have no problem with 3.5" tips. Like I said, I have 4" tips. They are at a 20 degree angle and are double walled stainless steel (as well as the exhaust they're welded to). Same setup as this basically, same tips at least for reference in photos

Considering thats my exact setup, lol I'd say it sounds good.
If anything, try looking for a longer resonator, or 6" instead of 4" round. Get rid of a little more drone that you'll learn to hate. Sound under load won't change much and will be just as good.
Did you pull the pn's off my youtube vid?

Try 12646 if the 6" will fit. There should be enough room, right above the brace. It might be a tight squeeze.

Or 10426 would fit I'd believe. 18" body vs the 14" will be better to break up resonance a bit better.

10436 is 22" body. This would be best, and I believe matches the JCW resonator length? Though I could be wrong and the JCW could be 22" overall, but I THINK its body length.

I'd go my last suggestion out of those if it'll fit. If you get your car up in the air just measure how much straight pipe length there is above the center brace. It should fit. I actually may swap this myself if it helps the drone.

What about just using a round muffler instead of the oval ones?Like the exhaust depot or Stratmosphere

A good exhaust shop can mate any muffler to your system. I saw a Yoshimira Motorcycle can used as a Mini Muffler and beleive it or not it sounded Great!

Changing between muffler setups within magnaflow usually will not change drone characteristics by much. This is because magnaflow mufflers are VERY straight through design. When u look in one end you'll see straight through to the exit (granted if its not an offset inlet/outlet design).
The most effective factor for drone will be pipe diameter. If you want to keep drone to a minimum go with a 2.25" diameter. Still larger than the JCW and will be enough for flow characteristics. It just might be not as deep as a 2.5" pipe.
